Teamsters Achieve Significant Contract Improvements with Alsco
In a major development for labor relations, Teamsters from
20 local unions across seven states have ratified two new regional agreements with Alsco, a national provider of laundry and linen services. The agreements represent a three-year commitment that brings substantial improvements to working conditions and benefits for members of the Teamsters union.
The ratified contracts include key enhancements such as increased training and meeting pay, improved
company pension contributions, and better strike language that protects workers during labor disputes. Additionally, the agreements ensure the preservation of
TeamCare benefits, which are critical for the health and well-being of the workers and their families. To top it off, there are also higher weekly minimum commission guarantees, providing greater financial stability for members.
Rocco Calo, Director of the Teamsters Industrial Trades Division, highlighted the often overlooked but essential role that laundry workers play in various industries. He stated, "Laundry workers often go unrecognized, but they play a critical role in keeping businesses, hospitals, and industrial facilities running safely and efficiently. The Teamsters have a long history of fighting for these essential workers, and these regional agreements deliver real improvements for our members across the South. We are proud of the progress made and will continue pushing for industry-leading contracts nationwide."
The Teamsters represent around
1.3 million workers in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, and these agreements mark significant strides in their ongoing efforts to secure fair treatment for all union members. Alsco Teamsters, who perform vital laundry and linen services for the hospitality, healthcare, automotive, and industrial sectors, will benefit greatly from these updated contracts.
One union member, Jim Sciancalepore, who has been an Alsco Teamster for 11 years, expressed his satisfaction with the new contract. He exclaimed, "This contract will have the biggest financial gains for me and my co-workers! We were finally able to break through the company's total control over creating better-paying commission routes versus hourly routes, while keeping our great Teamsters pension and health insurance plans intact. Our Teamsters negotiators and leadership did a great job with this agreement."
These developments showcase the continuous evolution and progress of labor unions in negotiating fair agreements that protect worker rights and enhance financial benefits. The contracts are particularly vital as they provide a framework for ongoing negotiations and set a precedent for future agreements across the region.
