UPM Raflatac Unveils Major Sustainability Milestones in 2024 Climate Review

UPM Raflatac's 2024 Climate Review: A Benchmark in Sustainability

UPM Raflatac recently unveiled its 2024 Climate Review, a comprehensive update illustrating the company's strides in sustainability and commitment to climate action. This report is a testament to UPM Raflatac's role as a key player in providing sustainable material solutions on a global scale. The review concentrates on three main focus areas: forests and land conservation, emission reductions, and innovative products and services.

Reducing Fossil Fuel Dependency

The need for immediate action against climate change is critical. UPM Raflatac has positioned reducing fossil fuel usage as a core initiative in its operational strategy. As of 2024, the company has succeeded in achieving a 55% reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 emission intensity when compared to a baseline year of 2015. Notably, factories in China, Malaysia, and Finland implemented contracts for renewable or CO2-free electricity, dramatically reducing their carbon footprints. These efforts are part of a larger target aiming for a 65% reduction by the year 2030, showcasing UPM Raflatac's long-term commitment to sustainability.

Commitment to Material Accountability

UPM Raflatac has made impressive advancements towards sustainability, reaching its goal of having 100% of purchased paper materials certified by recognized third-party forest certification schemes much earlier than expected, achieving this by the end of 2023, six years ahead of schedule. This pivotal milestone demonstrates the company’s leadership and unwavering ambition in promoting environmental responsibility. Furthermore, in pursuit of its 2030 goal for full traceability of other biobased materials, UPM Raflatac has made significant progress, reaching 81% in 2024. This is vital as the demand for renewable resources continues to rise alongside the growing need for sustainable sourcing of raw materials.

Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Practices

To empower its customers in making sustainable choices, UPM Raflatac introduced several groundbreaking products and services. Among these innovations is the Carbon Action plastic films portfolio, aimed at assisting the packaging industry in minimizing its carbon footprint while enhancing recyclability. In a pioneering move for the labeling sector, UPM Raflatac has integrated product carbon footprints into customer quotes, allowing for informed purchasing decisions driven by transparent data. This initiative is based on insights from the UPM Label Life service, which follows external validation to ensure its reliability.

Additionally, the company's UPM RafCycle™ recycling service has successfully received a certificate of validity from DEKRA, further reinforcing the credibility of its CO2 impact assessments. This accomplishment not only adds value to UPM Raflatac's service offerings but also bolsters customer confidence in their recycling contributions.

Looking Ahead

Robert Taylor, UPM Raflatac’s Director of Global Sustainability, expressed the company's commitment to its climate objectives: "Our decisive efforts have enabled strong and measurable progress on our 2030 climate commitments. Moving forward, we will increasingly concentrate on delivery towards our customers, investing in our LCA and Scope 3 services and in reducing the carbon footprint of our products. By collaborating with our partners and keeping our ambition to meet our climate goals, we can reduce impact at scale."

As UPM Raflatac continues to pave the way for sustainable practices, the 2024 Climate Review serves not just as a report, but as a roadmap guiding the company's future actions toward a more sustainable world.
