A recent report published by ABB, in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), sheds light on the evolving significance of direct current (DC) technologies in the electrical infrastructure of tomorrow. As the world transitions towards more advanced electrical systems, characterized by rapid growth in AI computing, electrification, and renewable energy sources, there is a renewed interest in DC technology.

The report, titled The Strategic Case for Hybrid AC/DC Power Shaping the Transition to the Next Electrical Architecture, argues that the future of electricity distribution will not solely depend on an exclusive choice between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC), but rather on an integrated system that harnesses the strengths of both technologies. While AC will continue to serve as the backbone of regional transmission and distribution networks, the rising integration of various energy sources and major loads that naturally operate on DC reveals its increasing relevance.

Technologies such as solar photovoltaic systems, batteries, electric vehicles, dedicated AI data centers, and several industrial automation systems heavily rely on DC power. By minimizing energy conversion steps from production to consumption, DC technology can significantly enhance system efficiency, increase the usable capacity of existing grid connections, and facilitate seamless integration.

The report identifies AI data centers as immediate drivers of DC adoption. As AI workloads demand ever-greater power densities, traditional electrical architectures are reaching their performance limits. The transition to 800 VDC is emerging as a standard architecture for next-generation AI infrastructure, enabling operators to optimize computational capacity while maintaining energy efficiency within limited grid connections. This shift has broader implications for many other key sectors, highlighting a variety of opportunities beyond data centers, including highly automated production sites and commercial buildings.

Morten Wierod, CEO of ABB, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between business leaders, policymakers, and technology stakeholders to drive widespread adoption of DC systems. He stated, "In a world that requires more energy while grappling with existing infrastructure constraints, promoting broader adoption of DC technology will necessitate closer collaboration and attention to its potential roles." With more than 25 years of experience, ABB’s DC solutions have proven their capability to reduce conversion losses, improve energy transport efficiency, and lower electricity demand. However, to encourage widespread implementation, unified technologies, standardized protocols, and skilled personnel are crucial.

Throughout the report, ABB and BCG address several long-standing misconceptions that have hindered the acceptance of DC technology. Concerns regarding scalability, safety, and cost-effectiveness are increasingly viewed as outdated assumptions rather than reflective of current technologies. Nevertheless, fragmentation in standards and a lack of specific DC-related skills are highlighted as urgent challenges that must be addressed to accelerate deployment.

ABB has historically been at the forefront of showcasing the energy-saving potential of DC – notably through its onboard power systems for ships, achieving fuel savings of up to 27%. In 2022, the company launched the industry’s first semiconductor circuit breaker. With over 700 patents related to DC, ABB is now extending its applications to include electric transportation, microgrids, and data centers, while collaborating with industry partners to explore how DC distribution can facilitate low-carbon aluminum production and green hydrogen generation.

This comprehensive report underscores the importance of bridging the gap between existing infrastructure and future energy demands. The transition to hybrid electrical systems that incorporate both AC and DC capabilities is crucial for creating an efficient, resilient, and future-ready electrical grid.
