Exploring Global Infrastructure: Insights from the 6th Summer Internship Program
The Japan Global Infrastructure Research Foundation (Japan GIF) recently hosted its 6th Summer Internship Program, focusing on global infrastructure research. Held from August 1 to October 3, 2026, this initiative targeted university students across Japan, encouraging them to engage in collaborative research activities.
The program kicked off with two days of face-to-face meetings in Tokyo, where nine students from eight universities were organized into two research teams focusing on the themes of "Resources" and "Nature." They aimed to verify the projections made in the influential report,
The Global 2000 Report to the President of the U.S.: Entering the 21st Century, published by the U.S. government in 1980. This critical examination involved assessing factors such as nuclear energy, oil demand and supply, climate change, urban population dynamics, and water resource distribution.
Under the guidance of dedicated tutors, the teams engaged in discussions and activities to develop their research papers and presentation materials. The initial meeting highlighted essential skills such as academic writing, resulting in fruitful discussions over the subsequent months through online meetings scheduled between August and September. These sessions emphasized verifying literature and statistical data validity while fostering an environment of intellectual exchange and collaboration.
On October 3, the program culminated in a formal presentation where the teams unveiled their findings to a panel of seven experts, including university faculty and researchers. Each team presented their research and responded to questions, leading to enriching dialogues that underscored the implications of their studies. The event concluded with the issuance of completion certificates, celebrating the hard work and dedication of the participants.
The program not only nurtured academic and research skills but also fostered connections among interns, tutors, and evaluators during a networking event following the presentations. Feedback obtained from the interns indicated a positive reception of the experience, with participants highlighting the value of considering diverse perspectives and the unique opportunity to present in front of seasoned professionals.
Participants expressed that this program significantly increased their interest in global infrastructure and provided them with a platform to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting. Comments from the post-program survey included reflections on being able to think critically from various angles, the enriching experience of presenting to experts, and a heightened awareness of global infrastructure challenges.
Through this internship program, Japan GIF aims to continually provide university students with opportunities for research and cross-university exchanges, thereby fostering greater awareness and interest in global infrastructure initiatives. As the world grapples with increasing infrastructural demands, understanding and navigating these complexities becomes essential for the next generation of leaders and researchers.
