Event Overview
On August 10, 2025, a significant event titled "How We Can Continue to Enjoy Chocolate While Supporting Sustainable Cocoa Practices" will take place at the Osaka-Kansai Expo Theme Week Studio. Organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the event will aim to foster dialogue and innovative proposals regarding sustainable cocoa production. Local high school students from Osaka will present their research and suggestions to raise awareness of the cocoa industry's challenges.
The Cocoa Industry's Challenges
The cocoa industry faces severe economic, social, and environmental dilemmas, particularly in key production countries such as Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Currently, around two-thirds of cocoa farmers in these regions do not earn sufficient income to meet their basic needs, perpetuating poverty, child labor, and environmental degradation. Reports indicate that 21.8% of children in Ghana are engaged in child labor in cocoa and fishing industries. The clearing of forests for cocoa cultivation contributes significantly to deforestation and ecological destruction.
Japan, which relies heavily on imported cocoa beans (around 70% from Ghana), must acknowledge that these issues are intrinsically linked to our lifestyles. As consumers, understanding the impact of our choices on the cocoa supply chain is vital.
Student Innovations and Proposals
During the event, students from local high schools will present proposals they have developed over three months, centered around the theme "How We Can Continue to Enjoy Chocolate While Supporting Sustainable Cocoa Practices." This serves not only as an educational opportunity but also seeks to stimulate consumer consciousness and encourage behavioral change regarding chocolate consumption.
The event aims to influence attendees by highlighting the importance of sustainable cocoa sourcing and the ethical implications connected to chocolate consumption. By taking the stage at such a prestigious international platform, the students hope to spark change in how consumers perceive and engage with the cocoa industry.
