ICANN Launches Universal Acceptance Curriculum Program

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has unveiled a new curriculum program aimed at supporting Universal Acceptance (UA), a vital step in achieving a truly multilingual internet. This initiative underscores the importance of ensuring that every valid domain name and corresponding email address can be utilized across all applications, devices, and systems, regardless of the script, language, or character length.

Overview of the Universal Acceptance Program

The UA Curriculum program allows educational institutions to incorporate essential topics such as Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), Email Address Internationalization (EAI), and the broader goals of UA into their academic offerings at no cost. ICANN will work closely with universities to train educators and blend these themes into both new and existing courses. So far, three institutions have formalized agreements with ICANN and are currently integrating the UA curriculum into their academic programs:

1. American University of Bahrain (AUBH)
Dean Marwan Hameed stated, "We are proud to sign this agreement with ICANN, marking a significant step toward enhancing our status as a leading academic institution in advanced computing and digital technologies. Integrating the Universal Acceptance curriculum into our programs better prepares our graduates to keep pace with the rapid transformations of the internet and technological landscape."

2. Universidad Modelo
Academic Coordinator Jorge Carlos Canto Esquivel expressed that the university shares a vision of inclusivity, reflecting ICANN's commitment to a global, interoperable internet. Their motto, "Para Si, Para Todos" (For You, For Everyone), aligns with this goal.

3. Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Technology (SRIT)
Director J. David Rathnaraj noted, "This collaboration is a proactive step towards our institution's engagement in the future of internet governance."

ICANN is also partnering with the Association of African Universities to extend this program to universities across Africa.

Importance of the Universal Acceptance Curriculum

The UA Curriculum is composed of twelve modules covering Universal Acceptance and related topics, including software application internationalization, IDNs, and EAI—elements crucial for establishing a multilingual internet and domain name system.

The role of Universal Acceptance cannot be overstated. It ensures that domain names—including newer and longer top-level domains (TLDs) and those in various languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Tamil, and Thai—operate seamlessly within the Domain Name System (DNS).
