Shanghai Celebrates International Talent with Magnolia Silver Awards Ceremony
On November 23, 2024, the vibrant city of Shanghai held its annual Magnolia Silver Awards ceremony, honoring 50 exemplary expatriates from 18 different countries. These distinguished individuals were recognized for their substantial contributions to the city's growth and the international exchanges that enrich its cultural fabric. The ceremony took place at the prestigious Grand Halls located at the northern end of the Bund, an iconic waterfront area.
Kong Fu'an, the Director General of the Shanghai Municipal Government's Foreign Affairs Office, presented medals and certificates to the recipients. In his opening remarks, he emphasized Shanghai's status as an international, innovative, and inclusive city that is at the forefront of China's modernization efforts. He acknowledged the indispensable roles that foreign experts, foreign-invested enterprises, and international organizations play in the city's development, stating they have not only witnessed but also actively participated in this exciting journey.
The recipients represent a variety of sectors, including commerce, finance, technology, maritime transport, healthcare, education, culture, sports, and agriculture. Among the notable awardees was Italian Pietro Brambilla, Chief Financial Officer for L'Oréal China in North Asia. Brambilla has spearheaded L'Oréal's investments and developments in Shanghai, helping it become the largest market for the company globally. His efforts have significantly contributed to creating a business-friendly environment in the city, driven by open markets and rule-based governance.
Another honoree, Francis Gurry, an Australian and former Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, was acknowledged for his support of intellectual property development in Shanghai and for facilitating multifaceted cooperation between the city and the WIPO. His contributions have played a vital role in transforming Shanghai into an international hub for intellectual property.
Franka Gulin from Croatia, who heads the Croatian National Tourist Office in Shanghai, was also recognized. Kong praised her relentless work in showcasing the beauty of China to the world, promoting the wonders of Shanghai, and sharing the city’s unique culture.
French academic Marc Delpech, a representative among the awardees, shared insights from his 30-year experience in Sino-French medical cooperation. As the coordinator for a French language training program for medical students at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Vice-Dean of its Sino-French Medical School, Delpech stressed the enduring friendship and growing partnership between China and France in the field of education and health.
Carlo D'Andrea, a leading representative of Studio Legale D'Andrea, was recognized for his invaluable assistance to numerous foreign companies looking to establish a presence in China, especially in Shanghai. The Italian lawyer praised the city as the premier destination for business in China, particularly in new technologies and high-tech industries. He highlighted Shanghai's commitment to deepening reforms and opening up, indicating that the city holds untapped potential.
Since its inception in 1989, the Magnolia Silver Award has been conferred upon expatriates, followed by the Magnolia Gold Award and Honorary Citizenship introduced in 1992 and 1997, respectively. Over the past 35 years, a total of 1,877 foreigners have been awarded, reflecting the city's appreciation for their various contributions to its development and international relations. The Magnolia Awards not only celebrate the achievements of individual expatriates but also reinforce the global bonds that enrich Shanghai's identity as a truly international metropolis.
