Transforming the Future of Japan Through Robotics: The Creative Robotics Contest 2026

Transforming the Future of Japan Through Robotics

On September 20, 2026, the Creative Robotics Contest will take place in Shibuya, Tokyo, providing a platform for young minds to shape the future of Japan through robotics. This exciting event is supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education and organized in collaboration with Human Academy Inc., a leading provider of educational services focused on robotics and programming for children, through their program, Human Academy Junior.

A Contest of Creativity and Knowledge

The Creative Robotics Contest aims to empower children with the skills and knowledge of robotics, encouraging them to explore, innovate, and solve real-world problems through hands-on learning. This year's theme, “Let's Make Japan's Future Better with Robotics,” invites participants to identify societal challenges and develop creative robotic solutions.

Twenty-five finalists, selected through rigorous preliminary rounds, will compete in two divisions: the Theme Exploration Division and the Time Attack Race Division. The contest will be held at the GMO Internet Group's Synergy Cafe on the second headquarters building in Shibuya. Takayuki Furuta, the head of the Future Robotics Technology Research Center at Chiba Institute of Technology, will serve as the head judge, bringing his expertise in robotics and education to assess the innovative projects.

Exploring Social Challenges with Robotics

In the Theme Exploration Division, participants will present their projects that address local or national issues, such as disaster prevention, environmental sustainability, tourism, welfare, and community, leveraging their knowledge of robotics and programming. They will showcase not only their completed robotic creations but also the reasoning behind their chosen problems, the strategies employed, and the innovation demonstrated.

The contest emphasizes the importance of inquiry-based education as stated in Japan’s educational guidelines. Children are encouraged to think critically and creatively rather than merely memorize existing solutions. The process of understanding why a robot may not function as intended and iterating on their design is crucial in facilitating genuine learning experiences.

Racing to Victory in the Time Attack Division

The Time Attack Race Division will challenge participants to program their robots for autonomous navigation through a predefined course, competing for the fastest possible completion time. Finalists will have two chances to demonstrate their technology and ingenuity in overcoming the challenges presented by the course on the contest day.

Utilizing the specialized kit from the Human Academy Junior Robotics Professor Course, participants will showcase their technical skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities, applying everything they have learned in their training.

Expert Judges and Awards

The judging panel comprises renowned experts in robotics, education, and digital technology. Alongside Takayuki Furuta, the panel features leaders from various industries, including representatives from Yukai Engineering and the Digital Human Resource Co-Creation Alliance. The contest will recognize and reward outstanding achievements with various awards, including the prestigious Minister of Education Award.

Supporting the Next Generation

Human Academy is committed to fostering the next generation of innovator. Through partnerships with RISE (Research Institute of STREAM Education for Creating the Future), Human Academy is capable of providing extensive resources and support, ensuring children gain invaluable experiences to enhance their learning. With over 2,000 robotics classes across the country, the program emphasizes practical skill development and creative thinking.

Attendance and Participation

The event also welcomes spectators free of charge, allowing families and community members to witness the incredible work of young innovators firsthand. Interested parties can register via the official website.

In conclusion, the Creative Robotics Contest 2026 not only seeks to solve pressing societal issues through robotics but also aims to inspire and empower young minds as they tackle the challenges of tomorrow. With a strong focus on education, innovation, and community involvement, the contest continues to cements itself as a significant event within the landscape of youth learning and robotics in Japan.
