WACCA Ikebukuro: A Creative Art Experience
In the heart of Ikebukuro, less than a five-minute walk from the East Exit of Ikebukuro Station, the multifaceted commercial building WACCA is redefining the connection between art and community. Managed by Eishin Corporation, under the leadership of President Ichiro Hata, WACCA aims to cultivate new values and attractions through the lens of human connections. This winter, from December 7, 2025, to February 1, 2026, WACCA Ikebukuro will host a unique exhibition directed by artist Yu Matsui (also known as Takuya Sekikawa).
This exhibition will utilize the entire first through fourth floors of WACCA, showcasing Matsui's diverse artistic works that explore the 'movement' and 'memory' of Ikebukuro. By researching the area from his unique perspective, Matsui has created pieces that resonate with both the locals and the visitors.
One of the highlights includes artworks inspired by smartphone photos collected from visitors at WACCA, an installation focused on the owl — a symbol of Ikebukuro — and the station’s unique hub functionality. Furthermore, there are video artworks that become visible when viewers move around the space, encouraging a dynamic interaction between art and the audience.
The positioning of these installations makes it easy for both art enthusiasts and those less familiar with the art scene to experience enjoyment while exploring the spaces. As visitors stroll through WACCA, they may find moments that resonate with their own memories captured on their smartphones or nostalgic reflections of their time spent in Ikebukuro. The exhibition aims to unveil unexpected perspectives and discoveries, turning each visit into an exploration of personal narratives connected to the location.
The exhibition coincides with WACCA's commitment to becoming a platform for novel artistic expressions that challenge conventional perspectives on space and locality. As said by the project coordinator, Nana Kanmuri, the aim is to connect vibrant individuals and convey meaningful information, reinforcing a culture of appreciation and understanding through art.
The exhibition's installations are designed to help visitors look at familiar landscapes and memories from slightly altered viewpoints. It encourages attendees to pause and reflect on their photographs and experiences in Ikebukuro, offering a chance to create new connections and reflect on the relationship between place and personal history.
