Hawaiʻi Esports Invitational to Make Its Return to Oʻahu for 2027 with Enhanced Community Engagement

The Hawaiʻi Esports Invitational Returns to Oʻahu

The excitement around esports continues to grow as the Hawaiʻi Esports Invitational gears up for its return to Oʻahu in February 2027. Organized by PlayVS, a prominent name in scholastic and collegiate gaming, this event promises to be bigger and better than ever, focusing on collegiate competition, community involvement, cultural education, and industry engagement.

A 3-Day Celebration of Esports

The 2027 Invitational is set to unfold over three thrilling days that will feature a blend of competitive gaming and communal activities. Following the success of the previous year's event, which saw record attendance and engagement, the stakes are high for 2027. The focus will remain on fostering teamwork and unity through gaming, as well as providing educational opportunities for participants.

Participants can anticipate competitive matches in popular titles such as Rocket League and Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate. The PlayVS College League will showcase six top schools competing for the title, including the four highest-performing teams from the Premier League and two additional wild cards. Winning teams will be awarded unique surfboard trophies designed by local artists, celebrating the local culture and talent.

In addition to collegiate competitions, the event encourages the involvement of middle and high school esports enthusiasts. A Rocket League scholastic showcase will highlight the abilities of local school teams, while an open Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate tournament offers additional opportunities for aspiring competitors.

Community Service and Cultural Engagement

A standout aspect of the Hawaiʻi Esports Invitational is its commitment to community involvement and cultural education. The Community Service Day will return, inviting students, educators, and residents to a day of service dedicated to mālama ʻāina, or caring for the land. Last year, volunteers contributed to significant conservation efforts at Waikalua Loko Iʻa, a Native Hawaiian fishpond, restoring ancient site structures and preserving native species.

Charles O'Donnell, Head of Partnerships at PlayVS, expressed gratitude for Zippy's ongoing support of the event, underscoring how essential community partnerships are in shaping educational and engaging experiences for students and the public alike. He stated, _“We look forward to building on that momentum in 2027 and delivering an even more impactful experience on Oʻahu.”_

Insights from Industry Leaders

The 2027 Invitational is not only about competition but also about learning and growth. An esports industry panel will feature experts and university directors discussing collegiate esports, educational pathways, and career opportunities within the gaming field. This panel will take place during a Zippy's-catered meet-and-greet, designed to facilitate connections between students, educators, and industry professionals, enhancing networking and career-cloud opportunities.

Record-Breaking Attendance

The previous event in 2026 made history as the largest collegiate esports event ever held in Hawaiʻi, with 1,234 attendees—a 35% increase from 2025. Attendees generated over 26 million digital impressions, marking a remarkable 225% increase compared to the previous year. This achievement can be attributed to Zippy's essential role as presenting partner, which supported various elements of the event including on-site activations, food, and overall experience for attendees.

Free Participation

Another exciting aspect of the Hawaiʻi Esports Invitational is that participation is free for all competitors at both collegiate and scholastic levels. More information regarding the event's dates, venue, participants, and programming will be revealed in the upcoming months, generating anticipation and excitement among esports fans and participants.

As the countdown to the Hawaiʻi Esports Invitational 2027 begins, participants, schools, and supporters are looking forward to what promises to be an extraordinary celebration of gaming, learning, and community spirit.
