Fortis Energy and EBRD Collaborate on Solar Project in Serbia

In a significant move towards boosting renewable energy in the Balkans, Fortis Renewable Energy BV has inked a mandate letter with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This agreement is focused on financing a remarkable solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, featuring a capacity of 270 MWp combined with a 72 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

Significance of the Project

The total project capacity of 342 MW will position it as the largest solar PV facility in Serbia, with implications that extend beyond mere scale. This collaboration represents a vital step in enhancing the energy security of Serbia while addressing decarbonization initiatives and aligning the region more closely with European climate and energy policies.

Renewable Capacity and Environmental Impact

Once operational, the Sremska Mitrovica solar power plant is expected to produce over 365 GWh of clean electricity every year. This production can potentially power more than 105,000 households and prevent around 182,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, an environmental benefit comparable to planting nearly 9 million trees each year. The expected construction commencement is set for the third quarter of 2026, with the completion slated for the first quarter of 2028.
