Bulleit Distilling Unveils Its First Ever 20-Year-Old Rye Whiskey
Bulleit Distilling Co. is celebrating a monumental milestone in the world of spirits with the debut of its
20-Year-Old Straight Rye Whiskey, a remarkable tribute to the foundational grain of American whiskey. Historically, rye has been crucial to the development of whiskey in the U.S., setting a precedent long before the bourbon craze took over.
A Tribute to Tradition and Craftsmanship
With a limited release of only
1,776 bottles, each uniquely numbered, this collectible rye pays homage to America's rich history in whiskey making. Bulleit has consistently championed the rye category, starting with its introduction of
Bulleit 95 Rye after demands from bartenders seeking a bolder cocktail ingredient. This latest expression continues that legacy, pushing the boundaries of flavor and aging.
Developed under the expert guidance of
Nicole Austin, Director of American Whiskey Liquid Development and Capabilities at Diageo, the assembly of flavors is aimed at capturing complexity while maintaining the robust rye base that defines Bulleit. Nicole and her team undertook the meticulous barrel selection and blending processes, ensuring that the barrels chosen could withstand two decades of aging without overpowering the ingrained spice character synonymous with Bulleit.
Distinctive Flavors and Characteristics
The
20-Year-Old Rye is crafted from Bulleit’s signature
95% rye mashbill, promising a robust and spicy palate. Matured for two decades in Kentucky warehouses, the whiskey is bottled at cask strength, with an impressive
ABV of 68.5% (Proof 137). It opens with an enticing bouquet of seasoned oak, warm baking spices, and dried fruit, offering a rich experience right from the nose. Upon tasting, expect a complex interplay of caramelized sweetness, dark fruit notes, and a lingering spice that confirms its rye foundation.
Nicole Austin elaborated on the balance achieved in the whiskey, stating, "We wanted the spice and structure that define Bulleit Rye to stay front and center, while allowing twenty years of maturation to reveal new layers of complexity."

The Legacy of Bulleit Rye
Since its inception in 1987, Bulleit has distinguished itself from the traditional corn-forward bourbons. With the Bulleit 20-Year-Old Rye, the distillery reinvents its legacy for a modern audience while remembering the traditions that shaped whiskey in America.
Bulleit encourages all patrons of the craft to enjoy responsibly, as they continue to deliver bold experiences and honor the age-old art of whiskey making.
