At the grand IFA 2026 in Berlin, a significant panel featuring experts from BLUETTI, BSW-Solar, the Shelly Group, and Flatpeak discussed the future of energy supply for households. With the theme "Energy. Value. Future – From Power Supply to a Smarter Lifestyle", the discussion focused on converting solar energy, energy storage, and smart-home devices into intelligent energy systems that can be managed efficiently.

Transforming Consumers into Active Players


The panel showcased how balcony solar systems, residential storage solutions, and smart-home technologies are empowering households to generate, store, and manage energy right where they consume it. Thomas Seltmann, a speaker from BSW-Solar, emphasized the need for open integration standards, dependable data sharing, and favorable market conditions to foster these advancements. He stated that the energy transition is becoming an integral part of everyday lives, enabling consumers to play a more active role in their energy management.

"To unlock this potential on a large scale, we require solutions that integrate seamlessly within an open and reliable energy ecosystem," Seltmann noted. He also highlighted the importance of practical security standards, such as the product norm for plug-in solar devices set to be published by the end of 2025, to ensure consumer safety and reliability for providers.

Mircho Mirev, the head of integrations at the Shelly Group, added, "The next step in Smart Energy isn't merely about connecting more devices but ensuring seamless cooperation among them." He pointed out that open interfaces, reliable signal exchange, and system reliability are essential to create a truly intelligent energy ecosystem.

Real-time Data and AI: The Future of Home Energy Management


Tom Hibbard, co-founder and sales director at Flatpeak, explained how charging systems linked to real-time electricity tariff data can enhance efficiency. "A home battery's intelligence is directly linked to the price signals it responds to. When connected to BLUETTI systems, they charge when energy is cheapest and environmentally friendly, discharging at times when it's less favorable, without household intervention," he stated.

The panelists also discussed how harnessing real-time data and AI can allow households to manage their energy consumption more proactively and automatically. "Having a solar installation or a standalone storage system can lead homeowners to an 'Aha moment'—understanding energy consumption better, identifying saving opportunities, and gaining a deeper insight into the energy world," highlighted Tristan Rayner, an energy expert involved with pv magazine and ESS News.
