Celebrating 55 Years of Ping-Pong Diplomacy: A Bridge Between Nations
Celebrating Ping-Pong Diplomacy in Beijing
On April 13, 2026, a significant event took place at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing to commemorate the 55th anniversary of ping-pong diplomacy between China and the United States. Organized by the General Administration of Sport of China, China Media Group (CMG), and the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the gathering drew over 500 attendees, including government representatives, international organizations, sports sectors, and young delegates from both nations.
Shen Haixiong, the president of CMG, emphasized the organization’s commitment to bringing the people of China and the U.S. closer through exchanges and cooperation, advocating for mutual learning. He expressed hope that CMG would actively work with various sectors to uphold the spirit of ping-pong diplomacy, contributing to the establishment of a community with a shared future for humanity, especially as China embarks on a new five-year plan.
Jan Carol Berris, the vice president of the U.S.-China National Committee, who was involved in the original ping-pong exchanges 55 years ago, shared her aspirations for the spirit of mutual respect and friendly exchanges embodied by ping-pong diplomacy to foster strong and stable bilateral relations. This would not only benefit the citizens of both countries but also contribute to global peace and development.
Petra Erika Gummesson Soerling, president of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), hailed ping-pong diplomacy as a milestone in the sport's history. She voiced her hope that the essence of this diplomacy would continue to strengthen international friendships.
During the event, former table tennis players Liang Geliang, Zheng Minzhi, Connie Mae Sweeris, and Judy Louise Hoarfrost shared their cherished memories of the historical ping-pong exchanges that served as a bridge for U.S.-China relations over half a century ago. Their reminiscing highlighted the positive impact that sports can have on diplomacy and international relations.
A documentary titled "The Silver Ball: A Journey Beyond," produced by CMG, was officially launched at the event. The film explores how the sport of table tennis can facilitate exchanges between the people of China and the United States, showcasing rich stories of friendship and cooperation through sports.
Additionally, the ceremony marked the initiation of a series of youth sports exchange activities between China and the United States set to take place in 2026, aiming to further strengthen ties between the younger generations of both countries through sports. This initiative is expected to nurture mutual understanding and friendships, building on the foundation laid by the historical events of the past.
As the event wrapped up, the participants left with a revived sense of hope and commitment toward fostering positive relations between China and the U.S. The spirit of ping-pong diplomacy continues to resonate as a unique and powerful tool for international dialogue and cooperation, paving the way for a brighter future in bilateral ties.
