Empowering Students to Lead the Future of Oral Health
In the face of a national crisis regarding the shortage of oral health professionals, Planet Smilez is strategically creating new pathways for aspiring dentists. Their forward-thinking approach is to inspire and engage students, particularly those from educationally and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, by providing them with early exposure, hands-on experiences, and mentorship. The aim is not just to address immediate workforce gaps but to empower the future generation of oral health professionals, encouraging them to return and serve their communities once they have completed their training.
Recognizing the importance of early intervention, Planet Smilez focuses on engaging students from Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). This initiative aims to illuminate the career paths available in dentistry and motivate these students to envision themselves as contributors to oral health in their communities. Dr. Kathryn Pawlak, alongside the leadership team of Planet Smilez, has taken significant strides in this mission, which includes organizing events such as the upcoming Discovering Dentistry Symposium (DDS).
Scheduled for Saturday, October 4, 2025, the DDS will take place at East Side High School in Newark, NJ, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This event aims to spark interest in oral health and STEM among middle and high school students. Participants will delve into the critical connection between oral health and overall health, explore diverse dental careers, and experience the daily lives of oral health professionals first-hand. Engaging activities, mentorship opportunities, and in-depth career explorations are set to empower the students attending the symposium.
The generosity of Delta Dental has played an enormous role in enabling these efforts. Since 2023, Delta Dental has invested over $1.7 million into programs that promote the development of innovative solutions and scalable models to inspire school-aged children to consider careers in oral health. In acknowledgment of this commitment, Planet Smilez was honored to be recognized as a 2024 awardee. Their dedication to hosting ten immersive workshops across the nation has further cemented their reputation in the realm of dental education and empowerment.
Dr. Pawlak’s passion for education and mentorship is evident in her belief that they can change lives. She has stated, "My goal for the DDS program is to empower children with oral healthcare knowledge and hands-on dentistry experiences. This will optimally help children envision a future in dentistry while also fostering a generation of oral healthcare professionals who can address the needs of their communities that they one day will serve." This vision not only seeks to fill the gaps in service but also nurtures a more conscientious and community-focused practice of dentistry.
The DDS symposium promises to offer more than just information; it is designed to create lasting connections between students and professionals in the field. Attendees can look forward to engaging with various activities that will not only enhance their understanding of oral health but also uncover the rewarding pathways within the dental sector. Through mentorship, hands-on learning, and networking opportunities, students are sure to leave the event inspired to pursue careers that will make a significant impact in their communities.
