Highstar Introduces Comprehensive Battery Cell Solutions for AI Data Centers
Highstar has made a significant leap in energy technology by unveiling a complete lineup of battery cell solutions aimed at powering artificial intelligence data centers (AIDCs) during the 2026 GGII Energy Storage Industry Summit. This innovative portfolio is multi-layered, designed to tackle the critical energy demands of modern data centers, which face evolving challenges as AI workloads increase.
Comprehensive Energy Solutions
The newly introduced battery solutions from Highstar cover three pivotal sectors of power management: grey-space uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, white-space battery backup units (BBUs), and grid-side energy storage. The solution is crafted to address pressing concerns in data center operations, such as load volatility, rapid response times, and dependable backup systems, especially as the density of data center racks continue to rise.
The grey-space layer is particularly innovative, utilizing a high-rate lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell rated at 85Ah, which can deliver substantial power quickly. This cell is adept at maintaining reliability even under frequent pulse conditions, ideal for UPS and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. It supports high-rate discharge while ensuring safety and durability—essentials for operators who must balance reliability with lifecycle costs. Additionally, the 50Ah sodium-ion cells have been developed to perform across a broad temperature range from -40°C to 80°C, further enhancing operational reliability.
Tailored Designs for Battery Backup Units
For the white-space battery backup units, Highstar is offering a flexible selection of tabless cylindrical cells available in both 18650 and 21700 formats, featuring both LFP and high-nickel NMC chemistries. These cells are specifically designed for BBU applications, promising high instantaneous power delivery, low internal resistance, reduced thermal rise, and enhanced safety metrics, all while accommodating diverse rack-space configurations, power demands, and budget constraints.
Grid-Side Energy Storage Integration
On the grid-side, the comprehensive system incorporates 314Ah lithium-ion cells and 160Ah sodium-ion cells, effectively balancing long-duration energy storage needs with the capacity for rapid power delivery. Together, these three interconnected layers provide a robust, coordinated system that enhances everything from rack-level protection and backup systems to broader energy storage solutions.
Innovative Engineering to Simplify Integration
Highstar's technology showcases an impressive integration of lithium-ion and sodium-ion chemistries across both prismatic and cylindrical platforms. The design incorporates advanced techniques in cathode, anode, electrolyte, and separator development, alongside methods like tabless current collection, precision pressure relief, and directional venting to maximize performance.
The overarching aim of this full-chain architecture is to minimize complexity in selection and integration for power equipment providers, system integrators, and data center operators. It also establishes a standardized foundation that can bolster joint validation and specific development tailored to AIDC power frameworks.
At the summit, Highstar participated in the launch of the '2026 Global AIDC Power Supply Industry Development Blue Book,' where it was honored with the title of 'Top Benchmark in AIDC Energy Storage,' signifying its authoritative standing within the industry. As the demand for AI capabilities in data centers escalates, Highstar positions itself as a leader in providing essential energy solutions that underpin this technological advance.
