Exploring the Carbon Pricing Initiatives at JPI Seminar on July 7, 2025

JPI Seminar on Carbon Pricing

On July 7, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host a pivotal seminar entitled "Addressing the Urgent Need for Carbon Pricing: Emissions Trading System Implementation and Carbon Credit Utilization". Esteemed speakers from the Nagashima, Ohno & Tsunematsu Law Firm, including Partner and Attorney Keiichi Watanabe and Associate Attorney Sayana Kurachi, will delve into crucial aspects of the new regulations and their implications for businesses in Japan.

Understanding Carbon Pricing Reforms

This seminar comes in the wake of the government’s recent approval of significant amendments to the GX Promotion Law, which were decided in February of this year. These amendments introduce substantial changes to the domestic carbon pricing framework, mandating participation in the emissions trading system for businesses directly emitting over 100,000 tons of CO2, starting in the fiscal year 2026. Furthermore, regulations for a fossil fuel levy will take effect in 2028, marking a critical shift in Japan’s approach to carbon emissions.

The implementation of the emissions trading system necessitates adept utilization of carbon credits. During the seminar, attendees will gain insights into the latest practical applications of both the emissions trading system and carbon credits.
