Sinopec Launches the World's Largest Single-Site PVA Production Facility in Chongqing
Sinopec Launches Major PVA Production Facility in Chongqing
On August 5, 2026, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, commonly known as Sinopec, proudly announced the commissioning of its new specialty polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) resin facility located at its subsidiary, Chongqing SVW Chemical Co., Ltd. This state-of-the-art facility boasts an impressive annual production capacity of 50,000 metric tons, positioning it as the largest single-site high-end PVA production base in the world.
The inauguration marked a significant milestone for Sinopec as the facility achieved stable operation during its initial startup phase. The first shipment of products was promptly dispatched to Europe, highlighting the immediate success and readiness of this new establishment. With this expansion, the total PVA production capacity at the Chongqing site has now reached 210,000 metric tons per year, further strengthening the global supply chain for essential specialty materials.
PVA is recognized for its water-soluble and biodegradable properties, making it a versatile polymer widely utilized in various industries. High-purity specialty grades are particularly sought after in sectors such as photovoltaics, electronics, optical films, and pharmaceuticals. Its applications also span textiles, construction materials, and innovative water-soluble packaging solutions, showcasing its importance across multiple market segments.
SVW Chemical, the operating division responsible for the new facility, has over 40 years of expertise in PVA research and development. From its humble beginnings with a single PVA grade, the company's portfolio has burgeoned to encompass over 100 unique grades tailored for diverse performance requirements and market needs. This breadth of offerings allows SVW Chemical to emerge as a prominent player in the international market, with more than 70 of its products currently exported to over 40 countries, including key markets in Europe and the United States.
The construction of the new facility was accomplished within a remarkable 17 months, recording a commendable 1.98 million safe working hours. During this period, the project team tackled several technical challenges, especially concerning precise temperature control and the maintenance of consistent product quality. Advances in technology were pivotal, with a new polymerization process enhancing production capacity by an impressive 40% compared to older models.
Additionally, environmental considerations were integrated into the design of the facility, which now features four exhaust gas and wastewater recovery units. These measures, combined with an automated packaging system, not only improve resource efficiency but also heighten overall operational effectiveness.
As Sinopec looks to the future, SVW Chemical plans to leverage its enhanced production capabilities and ongoing research initiatives to further expand its array of high-value specialty materials. This strategic move is aimed at providing a more dependable supply chain for customers around the globe, solidifying its reputation as a leader in the PVA market.
This recent development underscores Sinopec’s commitment to innovation and operational excellence as it continues to strengthen its leadership position in the global chemical industry.
