Henan Hosts International Storytellers to Showcase Culture and Media Trends

Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province in China, is currently a hub of creativity and cultural exchange as it hosts a five-day storytelling event. This initiative, titled "Meet in Zhongyuan, Discover China Through Henan – 2026 China Storyteller Partnerships Henan Tour," aims to bring together nearly a dozen journalists and content creators from around the globe, including representatives from the United States, Luxembourg, Vietnam, South Korea, Spain, Russia, Lithuania, and Egypt.

The event, organized by China Daily in collaboration with the Information Office of the Henan Provincial Government and Henan Daily, kicked off on Monday. Participants are expected to engage with various aspects of Chinese culture, industry, and new media trends firsthand during their stay, which runs until Friday.

Exploring the Heart of China

During the tour, attendees will journey along two key routes. One will traverse the backbone of China’s manufacturing industry and technological innovations, highlighting Henan’s pivotal role as a center of advancement. The second route will delve into the province's rich historical heritage, taking participants to ancient capitals and cultural landmarks that define Henan's legacy.

Thomas Jay Hopkins, a reporter with China Daily, expressed enthusiasm about this immersive experience. He noted, "The essence of China is held within the people and the culture they are eager to share, something that can only be appreciated through firsthand experience." He commented on the burgeoning micro-drama industry in China, which he describes as an emerging media format distinct from traditional television and film. "It's a major economic driver right now, attracting immense audiences and generating substantial revenue," he remarked.

Participants in the event also weighed in on the growing influence of artificial intelligence in media production. Geoff Thompson, the editor-in-chief of G-Media Sarl in Luxembourg, emphasized a balanced approach to technology. He advocated for viewing AI as supportive rather than as a crutch for writing tasks, stating, "We can use AI translation tools to understand reference materials, but original content creation must come from human ingenuity."

Building Global Connections

The China Storyteller Partnerships, established in 2023, aims to create a vibrant space for foreign journalists, experts, and social media creators passionate about sharing China's stories. Xing Zhigang, deputy editor-in-chief of China Daily, noted the partnership has expanded, now connecting nearly 50 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkiye, and Mexico.

Ping Ping, head of the Information Office of the Henan Provincial Government, highlighted the province's historical richness and economic strength. She expressed a desire to work alongside international creators to share authentic stories about Henan with global audiences. "Let foreign journalists, experts, and content creators speak and see for themselves, so they can present an innovative, open, and civilized Henan to the world," she stated.

Spanish vlogger Rodriguez Pascual Noelia, who has lived in China for six years, shared her excitement about being part of this storytelling tour, marking her third visit to Henan. She looks forward to discovering more about the ancient northern capital and the cultural significance of the Song Dynasty (960–1279). "I'm really glad to be here and eager to learn more about this province," she remarked.

The storytelling event not only offers a platform for cultural exchange but is also a testament to Henan’s ambition to promote its identity and stories on a global stage. With a rich blend of history and modern media, this event promises to foster greater understanding and collaboration between Henan and the world, setting a foundation for future storytelling initiatives.

As international storytellers engage with the culture and the people of Henan through this exciting tour, it is clear that the province is ready to share its unique narrative with an expanding global audience.
