City of Stockbridge Announces Site for Inaugural Recreation Center to Enhance Community Wellness

City of Stockbridge to Build Its First Recreation Center

In a significant move for community development, Stockbridge has finalized the location for its inaugural Recreation Center. This decision was solidified during a City Council meeting held on September 29, 2026, where unanimous support was expressed for the project. The chosen site is a 6.123-acre parcel located at the intersection of North Henry Boulevard and Burke Street, designed to serve as a hub for community wellness and engagement.

City Manager Shawn Edmonson highlighted the importance of this development: "Our residents told us they want a community center where they can connect and focus on their health and wellness. We look forward to making this a reality at the brand-new facility at 140 Burke Street that will serve every generation of Stockbridge residents."

The site selection was made after thorough analysis, with its strategic placement providing convenient access to Downtown Stockbridge and the nearby VyStar Amphitheater at The Bridge. The location promises to support a variety of recreational activities and foster connections among residents, businesses, and local events. It also allows for the development of pedestrian-friendly pathways and shared parking spaces, enhancing economic opportunities in the downtown area.

Edmonson further emphasized, "Locating the rec center in a central part of the city that is accessible for residents and supports the surrounding area was critical in our site selection. The parcel at North Henry and Burke is ideal given its proximity to so many of our other wonderful services and businesses."

Community input has played a vital role in the planning process, with residents expressing the need for a facility that accommodates a broad spectrum of wellness activities and educational programs. Although plans are still in the developmental stages, initial ideas for the Recreation Center include:
  • - Aquatic facilities
  • - Sports and fitness spaces
  • - Art and mentoring programs
  • - STEM and computer learning areas
  • - Programming tailored for both youth and seniors

These amenities aim to create an inclusive environment where individuals of all ages can gather, learn, and participate in various wellness initiatives.

As the planning moves forward, city officials intend to present site designs and a comprehensive community engagement strategy to the city’s leadership. A request-for-proposals process for design work will soon follow, ensuring that community voices remain integral throughout the development process. Additionally, public meetings will be organized to keep the community informed and engaged as plans are further refined.

Since celebrating a century of cityhood in 2020, Stockbridge has aimed to enhance its reputation as a business- and family-friendly environment in the Metropolitan Atlanta area. This project reflects the city’s dedication to improving residents' quality of life through sustainable initiatives that promote a balanced living, working, and recreational experience.
