Eos Foundation Contributes Over $70,000 to Massachusetts Schools for Healthy Breakfast Initiatives
Eos Foundation's Impact on School Breakfast Programs
The Eos Foundation has made significant strides in promoting health and nutrition by recently announcing the distribution of 2026 Healthy Start Awards to 145 schools throughout Massachusetts. This initiative, part of a broader mission to ensure that children start their day with nutritious meals, has allocated more than $70,000 in unrestricted funding—providing each school with a grant of $500.
This year's program recognizes schools that serve at least 80% of their students with universal free breakfasts, a vital meal intended to keep children nourished and ready to learn. Of all the schools receiving recognition, an impressive 87% implement the Breakfast in the Classroom model. This methodology is heralded as the “Gold Star Breakfast Model” by the Eos Foundation and is known to substantially elevate participation rates compared to traditional cafeteria services.
Andrea Silbert, President of the Eos Foundation, emphasized the importance of breakfast in enhancing educational outcomes, noting, "Massachusetts is one of only nine states to have enacted universal free school meals for all K-12 students. This ensures every child begins the school day nourished and able to concentrate." According to recent data from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, though average daily school lunch participation stands at 588,654 students, the breakfast figure hovers around only 291,792. This gap indicates that nearly 300,000 students are missing out on the crucial morning meal each day.
The issue of insufficient breakfast participation takes on added weight against the current economic backdrop, where many families are feeling the pinch due to financial constraints and uncertainties over food assistance programs. Here, school breakfasts offer a critical nutritional safety net for children.
To combat low participation rates, the Healey-Driscoll Administration recently launched the Strengthening School Breakfast Challenge, collaborating with the Eos Foundation, Project Bread, and New England Dairy. This initiative aims to enhance breakfast participation rates and ensure more students have access to a healthy meal to start their day. Secretary of Education Steve Zrike remarked, "Every student deserves to start the school day nourished, supported, and ready to learn. While we have made great strides in expanding access to nutritious meals through free universal state meals, our work is far from done. Through this new challenge, we aim to further assist schools in overcoming barriers to participation."
Research has consistently demonstrated that how breakfast is offered can significantly influence student engagement. A study from the Nutrition Policy Institute found that students are three times more likely to consume breakfast provided in their classrooms compared to those who only have access to cafeteria services before school. Offering breakfast in the classroom dismantles several common barriers such as transportation issues, family schedules, and the struggle of arriving early to eat.
As Senator Sal DiDomenico noted, “We understand from students, parents, and educators alike that children learn more effectively on full stomachs. The Healthy Start Awards stand as a testament to schools that facilitate access to nutritious breakfasts for children.” The Eos Foundation supports schools implementing the Breakfast in the Classroom initiative by providing grants that may reach up to $20,000, coupled with technical assistance. This funding can help schools cover operational costs, purchase necessary equipment, or incentivize desirable practices that introduce breakfast into the school routine seamlessly.
Since the inception of its Healthy Start Awards in 2014, the Eos Foundation has engaged extensively with school districts across Massachusetts. This ongoing collaboration aims to enhance breakfast participation in order to ensure that children are prepared to learn. The detailed list of this year's Healthy Start Award recipients can be accessed on Eos's website, alongside opportunities for schools interested in applying for Breakfast in the Classroom grants.
