Building a Sustainable Future: The Local SDGs Initiative in Shonai, Japan
In a pioneering move toward sustainable development, the Seikatsu Club Consumer Cooperative Union, headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has signed a comprehensive collaboration agreement with various local entities including Sakata City, Yusa Town, and the Shonai Midori Agricultural Cooperative. This was finalized on February 25, 2026, with the mutual goal of promoting sustainable growth within the Shonai region through a framework that embraces the principles of Local SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
The meeting saw key figures such as Akiko Yaguchi, the mayor of Sakata City, and Hiroshi Tamura, the president of Shonai Midori Agricultural Cooperative, formulating a roadmap that emphasizes local production and consumption—primarily focusing on food, energy, and welfare. This agreement is not just a formality, but a pledge towards building a resilient, self-sustaining community that can withstand both environmental and socioeconomic challenges.
Founded in 1965, the Seikatsu Club has nurtured strong ties with the Shonai region, recently establishing a migration and exchange base named TOCHiTO, which serves as a hub for urban dwellers from the metropolitan areas wishing to contribute positively to local life. Moreover, in response to severe rain disasters in July 2024, Seikatsu Club members actively volunteered for the relief efforts, exemplifying the intertwinement of community support and sustainable development.
Objectives of the Agreement
The comprehensive partnership agreement covers numerous objectives aimed at fostering local resilience:
1. Ensuring food safety and security.
2. Promoting agricultural and food processing industries.
3. Environmental conservation initiatives.
