Nucor Corporation to Enhance Utility Structures Facility in Indiana

Nucor Corporation Expands Utility Structures Facility in Crawfordsville, Indiana

Nucor Corporation, a leader in the steel industry, recently revealed plans to significantly expand its manufacturing operations at the Nucor Towers & Structures facility located in Crawfordsville, Indiana. This expansion is set to be supported by an impressive investment of $105 million. The objective is to bolster production capabilities for utility poles and related products essential for the electrical grid infrastructure across the nation.

According to Leon Topalian, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Nucor Corporation, the decision to expand the facility stems from the increasing demand in the utility market. He noted, “Utilities across the country are making significant investments to modernize the electric grid and meet growing electricity demand.” The company’s strategic move aims to cater to these rising needs while ensuring they remain a reliable partner for their customers’ long-term infrastructure projects.

The planned expansion will add over 120,000 square feet of manufacturing space, featuring advanced automation and modern production technologies. These enhancements are designed to not only increase production capacity but also to ensure operations are efficient, safe, and uphold high-quality standards. Currently, Nucor Towers & Structures employs around 328 individuals in this Indiana facility, and the expansion is expected to create approximately 100 new jobs, with an average salary of $87,500 per year.

Laurent De Mey, Vice President and General Manager of Nucor Towers & Structures, expressed pride in the company’s growing presence in Indiana. He mentioned, “This investment will allow us to better serve our utility customers while creating high-quality jobs and supporting continued economic growth in the region.” The planning and execution of this expansion were made possible thanks to collaborations with numerous local and state institutions, including Governor Braun and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

Nucor Towers & Structures has its origins from Nucor's acquisition of Summit Utility Structures LLC back in 2022, which previously operated from Pennsylvania. Following this acquisition, Nucor established new facilities in both Alabama and Indiana and is also in the process of building a facility in Utah. The company's existing facilities boast high levels of automation and efficient production processes for various products including utility structures.

In addition to the Crawfordsville facility, Nucor operates multiple locations throughout Indiana, employing around 2,600 workers. This includes their inaugural sheet mill in the state, which began operations in 1989. Nucor proudly identifies itself as North America's largest recycler, producing a variety of steel and steel products across several manufacturing sites in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

As Nucor moves forward with these developments, the utility sector is likely to see a significant uplift in productivity and efficiency, ultimately contributing to a more modernized and robust electrical grid, poised to meet the demands of a growing population and technology-dependent society. This expansion is a critical step not only for Nucor but also for the broader community, ensuring the continual support of infrastructure that caters to essential services.
