Empowering Women's Careers Through Authentic Mentorship with CariHarmo

In the modern workplace, many women grapple with uncertainty about balancing careers and personal lives, especially concerning motherhood and advancement in leadership roles. The seeds for this transformation were sown by COO Matsu Kaburaki of MODELY, who, even before experiencing marriage or parenthood, was enveloped in anxiety about future possibilities. She reflects on how difficult it was to visualize a successful career path without a relatable figure to turn to—one whose story was not just about glamorized success but rather a true representation of everyday challenges.

Motivated by the desire for a supportive community and realistic advice, the launch of CariHarmo—a women-only mentor and mentee matching web app—is set for September 2025. This initiative seeks to foster genuine connections among women who are navigating the complexities of their careers. The co-founder, Yuko Suzuki, is a mother of two and a dynamic business leader, often juggling meetings while preparing meals or tending to a sick child. Her testimony reveals that success does not belong only to 'superwomen'; it is about all women finding ways to overcome their fears and uncertainties.

A Platform for Realistic Role Models

CariHarmo aims to connect women with relatable role models who share their everyday struggles and successes. Women seeking advice (mentees) can utilize the platform to connect with seasoned professionals (mentors) who can guide them through diving into career challenges, starting families, or exploring alternative career paths. Common struggles include:
  • - Balancing personal life with career ambitions.
  • - Aspiring for higher roles and wondering if family life can accommodate this.
  • - Concerns about workplace dynamics when choosing to have children or not.
  • - Seeking guidance on how to shift careers or balance side hustles.

The mechanism of service is both user-friendly and effective. Users begin by creating a profile on the web app, then search for a mentor who matches their specific career interests. Following that, they can send requests for one-on-one conversations, whether online or offline. This innovative approach allows women from various backgrounds to find a supportive figure in their respective industries.

Addressing Societal Issues

According to a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, only about 5% of women earn over 5 million annually. Many express the desire for career advancement, yet their wage growth stagnates in their late twenties, further highlighted by a stark gender gap in managerial positions. Women are frequently forced to pause their careers due to family responsibilities or face barriers even when opting not to have children. The prevalent issue is the absence of relatable mentors and role models to guide them through these transitions.

CariHarmo endeavors to tackle these challenges head-on, creating a valuable support network that not only provides mentoring but also a sense of belonging and understanding.

Future Goals

Currently, the service is in its testing phase and available for free. As feedback from users is gathered, MODELY aims to expand the range of services offered and introduce paid options and B2B partnerships in the future. In the long run, the goal is to reach around 100,000 users, supporting women in carving their unique career paths while ensuring they feel empowered and connected in a supportive community.
