Catholic Cemeteries of Newark to Host Special Memorial Day Masses Honoring Veterans

Memorial Day Masses at Catholic Cemeteries of Newark

On Monday, May 26, 2025, the Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark will hold special Memorial Day Masses at several sacred locations in New Jersey, inviting the public to come together in prayer and reflection to honor the nation's veterans. These outdoor mass services, despite any weather conditions, will commence at 11:00 AM, providing an opportunity to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington will be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, while bishops and clergy members will officiate at various other cemeteries. This event not only acknowledges the fallen heroes but also all veterans and active military personnel. Joseph M. Heckel, Executive Director of Catholic Cemeteries, stressed the importance of such gatherings, stating, “Our Memorial Day Masses remind us of the sacred duty we share to honor and pray for our veterans.”

These Masses are part of a national initiative titled "Serve God and Country, a Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes," instituted by the Catholic Cemetery Conference. The program emphasizes the commitment to remember and pray for those who have bravely served in defense of freedom.

Attendees will gather under canopies in the cemeteries, and seating will be available. For those unable to partake in outdoor services due to the weather, indoor services will be held at Gate of Heaven and Maryrest Cemeteries. Cardinal Tobin will lead the celebration at Holy Cross, where significant construction of the new exterior mausoleum and chapel is underway, showcasing the tranquil beauty and dignified atmosphere of the sacred grounds.
