JAXA-Backed Venture Tenchijin Launches KnoWaterleak in France

Tenchijin Partners with Aqualter: A New Era for Water Management in France

Tenchijin, a space venture recognized by JAXA and based in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, has made a significant move into the European market with its recent partnership with Aqualter, a prominent company from Chartres, France. This collaboration aims to introduce KnoWaterleak, an innovative platform designed for leak detection and management in urban water systems, marking a pivotal step in the digital transformation of water infrastructure management.

Strategic Partnership and Licensing

In April 2026, Tenchijin will enter a software licensing agreement with Aqualter to implement KnoWaterleak in an ongoing long-term water supply management project in the Chartres metropolitan area. The platform will utilize satellite data and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance leak detection and optimize the management of water supply infrastructure.

Alongside this, Aqualter will become the first official distributor of KnoWaterleak in France, further solidifying this promising partnership.

Proven Accuracy in Leak Predictions

From January to April 2025, Tenchijin conducted a proof-of-concept (PoC) trial in collaboration with Aqualter, evaluating the leak prediction capabilities of KnoWaterleak in the Chartres urban area, which serves a population of 141,407 and spans an extensive 1,251.52 km of piping. Utilizing historical data from 2017 to 2023, it was found that 45.5% of the leaks that occurred in 2024 were located within the top 12.6% of areas deemed high-risk by KnoWaterleak. This outcome not only met the predetermined success criteria but also affirmed the reliability of the model.

With these results in hand, Tenchijin formalized its licensing agreement for the Chartres project, marking Aqualter as the inaugural operator of KnoWaterleak in France, where efforts to advance water management systems will intensify.

Integration with Aqualter’s Existing Platform

KnoWaterleak will be integrated into Aqualter's existing network monitoring platform known as Walter. This platform, which monitors operational conditions on-site, will now benefit from KnoWaterleak’s AI-driven satellite data predictions, enabling a synergistic operation that combines both ground and satellite data. This integrated approach allows for a comprehensive system that supports the identification of leak risks and the optimization of on-ground responses.

By merging satellite data analysis with on-site metrics, this innovative setup not only enhances leak detection accuracy but also plays a crucial role in water conservation and the longevity of infrastructure.

Future Prospects and Expansion Plans

In addition to its innovative partnership, Tenchijin announced its participation in the DISTRICT accelerator program, linked with the Aerospace Valley, one of Europe’s top aerospace clusters located in Toulouse, starting in April 2026. This partnership represents the first step toward tangible business development within Europe. Looking ahead, Tenchijin aims to explore additional project collaborations under Aqualter’s management, alongside conducting joint promotions aimed at new local clients, to expedite innovation in water infrastructure management.

Insights from Key Stakeholders

Jean-Patrick Le Van, CIO & COO of Aqualter, highlighted the importance of integrating KnoWaterleak's functionalities into the Walter platform, noting that leveraging AI and satellite data will greatly enhance leak prediction and on-site operational optimization. This transformative initiative not only supports improvements in network performance but also plays a vital role in the conservation of water resources.

Tenchijin's Partnership Manager, Keitaro Asaba, expressed excitement over KnoWaterleak’s introduction in France, emphasizing the historical and complex water network of Chartres as a testbed for future international expansions. The establishment of the first official distributor agreement in France marks a crucial turning point, enabling Tenchijin to leverage Aqualter's expertise and robust network for promoting data-driven water infrastructure management throughout France.

Conclusion

With its commitment to innovation and sustainability in water management, Tenchijin, in collaboration with Aqualter, is poised to make significant contributions to urban water infrastructure. As partnerships and technology integration deepen, the future for water resource management in France and beyond looks promising.
