One such professional is Dr. Gloria Wu, a physician and surgeon who opted to pursue an MBA after the COVID-19 pandemic radically transformed her medical practice. When the pandemic hit, Wu experienced a dramatic decline in her patient base, losing nearly 80% of her clients almost overnight. Instead of waiting for the healthcare landscape to stabilize, she began to rethink the future of her career, asking herself, "What should the next decade of my career look like?"

"I wanted to add a touch of 'Beyoncé' to my career," Wu remarked, referencing the global icon known for her continual reinvention. "Success is defined by each individual, and for me, it meant preparing for what’s to come."

By enrolling in the MBA program at Los Angeles Pacific University, Wu aimed to deepen her understanding of healthcare systems, leadership, and emerging technologies that are shaping modern medicine. "I felt that this could be the third act of my career," she explained. "If I was to reinvent myself for the next decade, I needed to embrace change."

Dr. Wu's journey in medicine has long been marked by resilience and adaptability. Born in Cuba, she grew up as a native Chinese speaker, learning Spanish as her second language and English as her third before becoming a U.S. citizen at the age of 12. Throughout her career, she successfully built a medical practice while navigating different cultures and professional environments, shaping her perspective on leadership and lifelong learning.

When the pandemic disrupted healthcare systems worldwide, Wu seized the opportunity not just to adapt but to amplify her impact beyond clinical practice. As she pursued her MBA, she also took on leadership roles within healthcare startups, eventually becoming the Chief Medical Officer of one and later serving as the Chief Operating Officer. This experience provided her with practical insights into health data, artificial intelligence, and digital health systems.

"I learned so much about data and innovation in healthcare," she said. "It gave me a broader understanding of what medicine could become in the 21st century." Simultaneously, Wu embraced important leadership responsibilities; during her first year in the program, she served as president of a medical association representing nearly 4,900 physicians.

For Wu, lifelong education is closely linked to continuous learning and neurological health. She emphasizes the research on brain plasticity—the brain's ability to form new neuronal connections over time—as one of several reasons she believes education should be a lifelong pursuit. "Education helps the brain grow," Wu stated. "It's like Miracle-Gro for the mind."

Today, Wu continues her medical practice while expanding her involvement in healthcare leadership and innovation. Her advice for professionals contemplating a return to school later in their careers is straightforward: "The world will often tell you no. Focus on the yes."
