Elevator Day: A Step Towards Safety
On November 10, Japan celebrates Elevator Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the safe use of elevators and escalators. This date holds historical significance, as it marks the installation of the first electric elevator in Japan at the Ryōunkaku tower in Asakusa, Tokyo, in 1890. Since then, elevators have evolved into an essential mode of vertical transportation in urban environments.
In anticipation of this year's Elevator Day, the Japan Elevator Association (JEA) is launching a nationwide safety campaign with the support of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The campaign is aimed at promoting a culture of safety and awareness regarding the proper use of elevators and escalators. Through various interactive initiatives, the JEA aims to educate the public on the importance of not walking on escalators and other safety practices.
Survey Results Uncover Public Perception
A survey conducted by the JEA revealed that over 90% of participants believe that walking on escalators is unsafe. This result underscores a growing concern about the safety of users. The survey, which has been conducted annually since 2009, found a declining trend in the number of people who admit to walking on escalators, with 60% of respondents confirming that they occasionally engage in this practice.
In 2023, the association will introduce new survey questions to further understand user behavior and attitudes towards elevator and escalator safety. The results will be published on their official website and used to inform future safety initiatives.
Educational Campaigns and Materials
To amplify the campaign's message, the JEA will distribute posters and stickers featuring their mascots, Beta-kun and Esuka-chan, promoting the importance of safe elevator and escalator usage. These materials will be displayed in public transportation facilities and various public places. The design encourages consideration and understanding while reminding users of potential risks, especially those using strollers or mobility aids.
For 2025, the JEA is introducing a unique twist to their announcements by inviting citizens to participate in a promotional program called, "Answer the Survey and Win!" Participants can enter a lottery to win a bookstore gift card by completing the online safety survey that runs from November 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026.
Engaging the Community
The campaign includes various outreach initiatives, including street campaigns on November 10 where safety leaflets, pocket tissues, and glow pens will be handed out. Collaborating with local transportation agencies and community organizations, the campaign will emphasize the importance of safe practices when using elevators and escalators.
Educational materials will also address emergency situations, particularly earthquake safety, to ensure that users are adequately informed about the correct protocols in case of an emergency.
What Lies Ahead: An Ongoing Commitment to Safety
The JEA's commitment to safety does not stop at the campaign. Annually, they strive to enhance public awareness about utilizing elevators and escalators safely, ensuring that everyone—regardless of their mobility—can confidently use these conveniences of modern infrastructure.
With approximately 780,000 elevators and 70,000 escalators in operation across Japan, promoting safe usage is vital for buildings that cater to a broad demographic, including the elderly, those with disabilities, and children. The JEA hopes that through continuous education and public engagement, the rate of accidents will decline, creating a safer environment for all.
