Building Homes for Heroes Pays Off Mortgage for Family of Fallen Soldier

Support for the Johansson Family: A Legacy Honored

In a heartfelt announcement, Building Homes for Heroes, in partnership with Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) and Amazon Web Services, has committed to paying off the mortgage for the family of Sergeant Major Anders Johansson, a distinguished U.S. Army Special Forces soldier who tragically lost his life in a vehicle accident. This announcement marks a significant moment for the Johansson family, offering them essential financial stability during a profoundly difficult time.

Sergeant Major Johansson served with honor for nearly 22 years, earning numerous accolades, including the Silver Star and Purple Heart, for his bravery and dedication to the nation. His unexpected passing on December 26, 2024, left behind his wife Sarah and four children. The mortgage payoff will alleviate one major worry for the family, allowing them to focus on healing and moving forward.

The announcement was made during the inaugural National Capital Classic golf fundraiser held at the historic Army Navy Country Club, co-sponsored by SAIC and AWS. The event successfully raised over $300,000 to further support Building Homes for Heroes’ mission of providing mortgage-free homes and essential services to veterans, Gold Star families, and first responders. By easing financial burdens, the organization aims to assist families like the Johanssons in picking up the pieces after a loss.

Andy Pujol, founder and CEO of Building Homes for Heroes, remarked, “While we can never repay what Sergeant Major Johansson and his family have sacrificed, we can honor his legacy by ensuring his family has the stability of a mortgage-free home. This exemplifies the impact of our partnerships with SAIC and AWS.”

The day was not only a recognition of Johansson’s service but also an opportunity for the attending community and corporate partners to show their commitment to supporting veterans. "Being privileged to stand alongside organizations like Building Homes for Heroes is a testament to our commitment to those who have served and their families,” said Toni Townes-Whitley, CEO of SAIC.

Sarah Johansson expressed immense gratitude for the support, stating that this relief enables her to focus on her children and their recovery amidst the trauma of their loss. “This gift means we can face our future without the added burden of financial uncertainty,” she said, emphasizing the importance of community support during such a challenging period.

As Building Homes for Heroes aims to build, gift, and modify up to 50 homes in 2025 and help thousands of veterans and first responders, this milestone illustrates the broader goal of honoring service members while providing them with essential assistance. With a robust program that has consistently rated high in performance and accountability, the organization has gifted over 400 homes since its inception.

Through community efforts and strategic partnerships, organizations like Building Homes for Heroes are changing lives and ensuring heroes and their families receive the respect and support they deserve. The legacy of soldiers like Sergeant Major Johansson lives on through the love and stability provided to their families.
