Odyssey Energy Solutions Secures $74 Million to Boost Financing of Renewable Energy Projects
Odyssey Energy Solutions, recognized as a leading platform for financing distributed renewable energy (DRE) projects in emerging markets, recently announced a significant funding round totaling $74 million. This capital infusion is essential for expanding their operations and facilitating renewable energy financing, particularly in regions such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
The funding is composed of a $27 million equity round along with $47 million in debt financing. New equity investors that have joined the initiative include Broadscale Group, FMO, and Al Mada Ventures, while existing backers such as Union Square Ventures, Equal Ventures, Abstract Ventures, Twelve Below, FJ Labs, MCJ, and Transition Ventures continue their support. Additionally, the debt component attracted significant financiers like British International Investment, BIO, and the Facility for Energy Inclusion.
This financial backing aims to drive the continued growth of Odyssey’s platform, which plays a pivotal role in connecting over 6,000 solar installers and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms with financiers and equipment suppliers. The reach extends across more than 50 countries, enabling access to approximately $3.6 billion in capital funding for distributed energy ventures. In 2024, Odyssey launched a procurement platform that aggregates equipment procurement across its expansive EPC network, resulting in more favorable pricing for small-to-medium-sized companies with supply chain credit.
Emmy McAteer, co-founder and CEO of Odyssey Energy Solutions, highlighted the historical focus of financing for DRE and noted the critical gap it has left upstream. She stated that small and medium-sized EPCs and installers frequently struggle to access the necessary working capital for equipment procurement and project completion. Odyssey’s initiative directly addresses these challenges by facilitating equipment pricing and financing, thus accelerating the delivery of renewable energy projects
The timing of this announcement comes as the demand for distributed renewable energy is increasing in Odyssey’s core markets due to several converging factors. The combined effect of dwindling solar and battery costs, climbing oil prices, and advancing governmental policies has greatly enhanced the economic feasibility of distributed solar compared to fossil fuel options. For example, in Nigeria, where diesel generators overwhelmingly outnumber grid-connected power plants, diesel prices soared by over 93% between February and April 2026 due to supply chain disruptions.
India has also seen remarkable growth, with Odyssey’s platform experiencing a 205% increase in the past year alone. The introduction of new domestic manufacturing requirements for solar components is reshaping supply chains and driving demand for Odyssey’s procurement and financing capabilities. Rapid construction of data centers driven by a surge in AI computing demand has further amplified the need for reliable electricity sources, amplifying the urgency of deploying distributed solar solutions.
Andrew Shapiro, founder and Managing Partner at Broadscale Group, expressed his enthusiasm for Odyssey’s role in this vital sector, noting that the demand is clearly present, the economics support significant growth, yet access to capital remains a pressing constraint. Piyush Mathur, co-founder and Managing Director of Odyssey, echoed these sentiments, stating that conditions for clean energy deployment have never been more favorable. As EPCs and distributed energy developers expand, a critical need for advanced procurement and financing solutions becomes evident.
The new funding is slated to enhance Odyssey’s procurement platform, further improving supplier relations and offering integrated supply chain credit. With a heightened demand from commercial and industrial clients for solar and storage solutions, installers often struggle with cash flow, resulting in backlogged orders. Utilization of Odyssey’s procurement framework enables these entities to efficiently execute multiple projects concurrently, thus accelerating the rollout of renewable energy solutions.
The recent funding announcement follows an earlier $15 million Series A funding round in May 2023, which brings Odyssey Energy Solutions' total capital raised to $94 million. Moreover, Odyssey is recognized as one of the inaugural portfolio partners of Multiplier, an advisory firm co-founded by prominent figures Jigar Shah and Jonathan Silver, both of whom previously served in the U.S. Department of Energy.
