Climate Challenge Initiative Successfully Hosts Educational Event in Paris to Strengthen China-Europe Cooperation
On June 26, 2025, Paris served as the backdrop for a significant information and educational event organized under the Climate Challenge initiative (Baoting, Hainan). This gathering marked two historic anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, and the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. Jointly organized by the People's Government of Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County in Hainan Province and the Ningyuan Institute of Climate and Sustainable Development, this event saw robust participation from both Chinese and European climate leaders, with the support of the Chinese embassy in France.
In attendance were over 100 representatives from more than 80 institutions across China and Europe, highlighting the event’s broad appeal and significance. During this occasion, six key collaboration projects between China and Europe were signed, setting a solid foundation for future cooperation in environmental sustainability and carbon reduction. These efforts were vital in stimulating innovation in green and low-carbon technologies, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Sino-European partnership.
Xie Zhenhua, China's first Special Envoy for Climate Change, along with Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation and former French Ambassador for Climate Change, delivered heartfelt video messages, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced climate-action effectiveness and the potential for innovative solutions.
The Climate Challenge initiative aims to devise innovative climate solutions across four priority areas: proactive health care, sustainable architecture, a 1.5-degree lifestyle, and food security through sustainable agriculture. Mr. Xie underlined the importance of cross-sector collaboration, affirming that national planning, local actions, and international cooperation are crucial in addressing climate issues.
Emphasizing the potential of the Baoting innovation zone, Ms. Tubiana reflected on its role as a model for international cooperation, hoping to inspire other regions to adopt similar ambitious climate objectives. Meanwhile, Guo Xiaolin, Minister-Counselor of Science and Technology from the Chinese Embassy in France, highlighted the synergy between the Baoting initiative and European innovation ecosystems, focusing on green energy, smart agriculture, and low-carbon technologies.
The event also facilitated direct presentations for selected projects, including a low-carbon health and wellness center, innovative materials for sustainable development, and integrated energy solutions from Northern Europe. These projects showcased the collective efforts and innovative possibilities stemming from the China-Europe partnership in combating climate change and promoting sustainable practices.
Moreover, representatives from various European governmental agencies and industry associations shared their expertise and insights on supporting the development of the Baoting innovation zone. Their contributions provided valuable recommendations for enhancing cooperation in green technologies and sustainable development strategies.
The successful completion of this educational initiative marks a significant milestone in advancing China-Europe cooperation for ecological conservation and carbon reduction goals. As the initiative extends invitations to additional institutions and projects, there lies a shared commitment to contribute towards ensuring global climate resilience and sustainable development, paving the way for a greener, low-carbon future for all.
