A New Era for Kyushu Shinkansen
In an exciting development for sustainable transportation,
Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu),
Kyushu Electric Power Company,
Embio Holdings,
Fuyo Lease, and
CRE have united to embark on a groundbreaking project that will harness solar energy to power the Kyushu Shinkansen, a high-speed train in Japan. Through the innovative use of an off-site Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), this initiative marks a significant step towards a greener future for rail travel in the region.
Overview of the Initiative
This ambitious project will feature solar panels installed on the roofs of logistics facilities operated by CRE. The electricity generated from these solar installations will be supplied to the Kyushu Shinkansen via Kyushu Electric Power. Consequently, JR Kyushu and the participating companies have executed a contract to facilitate the provision of renewable energy through their collaborative efforts using the off-site PPA model. The expected commencement of this supply is set for August 2027, with the infrastructure in place to efficiently deliver electricity derived from renewable sources.
Key Details of the Power Supply
- - Supply Start Date: Electricity supply will gradually begin in August 2027.
- - Location: The energy will directly support the operational power of the Kyushu Shinkansen along the Kagoshima route.
- - Supply Scale: The power generation capacity is estimated at approximately 8,000 kW DC, primarily derived from facilities located in Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures. The projected annual electricity output is around 9.8 million kWh, resulting in a significant reduction in carbon emissions of about 4,600 tons of CO2 — equivalent to the emissions produced by roughly 1,800 average households in a year.
Commitment to Reducing Carbon Emissions
Each of the five companies involved has a robust commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting a sustainable society:
JR Kyushu
In February 2025, JR Kyushu introduced its long-term vision for environmental initiatives, titled “JR Kyushu Group Environmental Vision 2050.” This plan emphasizes the necessity of collaboration with regional stakeholders and partners to create a future in harmony with nature. The company aims for a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, compared to 2023 levels, ultimately targeting net-zero emissions by 2050.
Kyushu Electric Power
The company launched the “Carbon Neutral Vision 2050” in April 2021, aimed at aligning its practices with societal needs for carbon neutrality. By facilitating electrification and delivering stable eco-friendly energy, it strives to achieve a
