Introducing a New Short-Term Program for Local Public Relations Management at Social Design University

Social Design University Launches a New Short-Term PR Program

On November 2, 2026, Social Design University, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, will introduce its new short-term program, "Public Relations Strategy Management Course for Revitalizing Local Communities." This course aims to equip participants with practical skills in communication strategies necessary for engaging with various stakeholders in local revitalization efforts.

In today's information-rich society, merely broadcasting local initiatives and charms does not guarantee they reach the intended audiences or evoke the desired emotions and actions. Institutions like local governments, businesses, and organizations involved in community revitalization must develop strategic communication methods that accurately link a region's unique values with the media and other stakeholders. This course is specifically aimed at professionals within these sectors who seek to harness public relations as a strategic tool for driving societal change and generating value.

The curriculum includes an exploration of significant media theories, such as the "spiral of silence" and "pseudo-environments," which will shed light on how news organizations assess newsworthiness. Participants will progress from understanding media theory to creating press releases grounded in these theories, assessing public relations from a marketing and management perspective, and applying case studies from local businesses. Ultimately, attendees will develop and present a public relations strategy for local revitalization tailored to their respective organizations.

Key Learning Outcomes

Participants will develop five essential competencies throughout the course:
1. Analyzing Information Environment: Critically assess the gap between the organization's desired public image and the societal perception of its reality.
2. Understanding News Value: From a newsroom perspective, participants will learn how press releases are filtered and understand what news is prioritized by media outlets.
3. Effective Communication Skills: Participants will craft compelling press releases using their organization's projects while adhering to news value criteria.
4. Shifting to a Strategic Perspective: Understand public relations not just as a communication tool but as a core component of business strategy and management.
5. Strategic Stakeholder Engagement: Based on community collaboration examples, participants will devise a strategic public relations plan aimed at mobilizing society and generating new business value.
