Kolmar Korea Expands Sun Protection Offerings to Include Hair and Scalp

Kolmar Korea Expands Product Range for Hair and Scalp Sun Protection

Kolmar Korea, a leader in K-beauty sun protection products, is making waves with its latest foray into innovative sun care solutions tailored for hair and scalp. As the global trend of 'skinification' gains traction, consumers are increasingly recognizing the importance of treating their scalp and hair with the same care as their skin.

Introduction to New Products

Inspired by this shift, Kolmar has developed the 'Scalp Sun Essence,' a cutting-edge product designed specifically for the scalp's needs. This essence is formulated with an SP50+, providing strong UV protection directly to the scalp. Unlike traditional sunscreens, which are often oil-heavy and hard to apply on the scalp and hair, the Scalp Sun Essence features a unique blend of water-soluble and lipophilic UV filters in an optimized ratio, resulting in a lightweight texture that glides smoothly on the skin.

In addition, Kolmar plans to expand this line with additional formats, including mists and sprays, and will introduce cleansing products aimed at sun protection for the scalp. The company anticipates launching these innovations in South Korea within the year, with plans for international expansion, including the lucrative U.S. market, set for next year.

Protecting Hair from UV Damage

Beyond scalp care, Kolmar has rolled out a 'photo-protective hair composition' aimed at shielding hair from harmful light exposure, including ultraviolet rays. Hair is constantly subjected to UV radiation and other detrimental light types, which can lead to color fading, dryness, and breakage over time. While most hair care products focus predominantly on heat damage, Kolmar’s offerings step into a relatively untapped category of light protection.

To address this gap, the company has developed a technology that incorporates special silicone oils formed with a large molecular structure and a high refractive index, effectively dispersing light. This innovative technology minimizes the amount of stabilizers and oils required, ensuring that the final products maintain a light and non-greasy feel.

Furthermore, the formula can be enhanced into multifunctional products by incorporating active ingredients such as biotin, panthenol, and niacinamide, which can help reduce hair loss, soothe the scalp, and care for sebum and pores.

Standardizing UV Protection Evaluation

Kolmar Korea is also setting new standards in product efficacy with a novel method to objectively assess the effectiveness of UV protection in hair care. Previously, there were no standardized methods to measure how well hair products protected against UV damage. In response, Kolmar has developed a procedure that analyzes color changes in hair before and after UV exposure, allowing for an accurate measurement of damage and the effectiveness of UV protection.

This groundbreaking research was published last year in the international dermatological journal, Skin Research and Technology (impact factor 3.2), and has garnered acclaim for its scientific contributions.

The Future of Sun Care Products

According to a representative from Kolmar Korea, the increasing specificity of global sun care markets is driving rapidly growing demand for solutions designed to protect hair and scalp. “Leveraging our R&D capabilities, which encompass product development, innovative materials, and efficacy assessments, we aim to lead the market with our next-generation hair sun care products,” they stated.

With over 70% of the Korean market share for sun care products, Kolmar Korea is widely regarded as one of the key players driving the global rise of Korean sun protection solutions. The company made history in 2013, being the first in the Korean cosmetics industry to receive OTC certification from the U.S. FDA. In 2022, Kolmar further enhanced its research capabilities by establishing Korea’s first specialized UV protection research center, the 'UV Tech Innovation Lab.' In partnership with globally popular K-beauty brands including Beauty of Joseon, SKIN 1004, and Round Lab, Kolmar Korea recently surpassed a cumulative global sales milestone of over 100 million units of sun care products they've developed.

As Kolmar Korea continues to innovate, the beauty community eagerly anticipates how these advancements will reshape the sun care landscape, ensuring that consumers can protect their most valuable assets—their skin and hair—from the sun’s harsh effects.
