Canon Earns 'Leader' Status for Sustainability Efforts in MarketScape Report

Canon's Achievements in Sustainability

Canon has once again been recognized for its exceptional commitment to sustainability. In the latest report published by IDC, titled _MarketScape: Worldwide Sustainability Programs and Services Hardcopy 2026 Vendor Assessment_, Canon has been awarded the coveted 'Leader' status for the second time in a row. This evaluation highlights the company’s impressive performance in sustainability compared to 11 major hardcopy vendors from around the globe.

The IDC report calls Canon a suitable partner for organizations seeking a technology-driven and comprehensive approach to sustainability. It particularly emphasizes Canon’s innovative solutions, which aim to support sustainability goals for enterprises of all sizes, from large corporations to small and medium-sized businesses.

Comprehensive Sustainability Approach

Canon’s dedication to sustainability spans the entire product lifecycle, from raw materials procurement to production, distribution, usage, maintenance, and finally, recycling. The company is actively developing technologies and systems that contribute to resource circulation and decarbonization. Its initiatives include reducing the consumption of new resources, utilizing recycled materials, and minimizing waste generation. Canon is committed to reducing CO2 emissions during both the production and usage phases, aiming to lessen its overall environmental impact globally.

One significant aspect of their resource circulation efforts includes the remanufacturing of used multifunction printers. Canon has established unique remanufacturing technologies and processes at its facilities in Japan and Germany. As a result, over 90% of the parts in the remanufactured printers are reused, offering high-quality and high-performance products at competitive prices. Furthermore, in April 2026, Canon will launch its remanufacturing business in the United States, expanding its global sustainability initiatives even further.

Since 1990, Canon has also spearheaded a toner cartridge recycling program, retrieving used cartridges across 24 countries and performing recycling operations in locations such as Japan, France, the US, and China. The company processes the plastic from recycled toner cartridges to match the quality of new plastic materials, allowing for their reuse in the production of new toner cartridges.

Commitment to Decarbonization

In its pursuit of decarbonization, Canon has set a target since 2008 to annually improve the lifecycle CO2 improvement index per product by an average of 3%. By 2025, the company has achieved an average annual improvement of approximately 3.59%, leading to a cumulative improvement of around 45.5%. Looking ahead, Canon is committed to reducing its environmental impact through a variety of products, technologies, and business activities, with a long-term goal of achieving net-zero CO2 emissions across the entire product lifecycle by 2050.
