Horizon Capital Partners with Notus Energy for Wind Project in Ukraine
Horizon Capital Teams Up with Notus Energy
In a landmark move for renewable energy in Ukraine, Horizon Capital has officially partnered with Notus Energy, an established player in the renewable energy sector, to finance a groundbreaking 124 MW wind project located in the Odessa region. This marks the initial investment from Horizon Capital's newly established Horizon Capital Catalyst Fund (HCCF), aimed at reconstruction and sustainable development in emerging markets.
About Horizon Capital
Horizon Capital is a leading private equity firm in the emerging markets of Europe, boasting an impressive $1.8 billion in assets under management. The firm focuses on empowering visionary entrepreneurs in Ukraine and Moldova, supporting businesses that show strong prospects for growth. Through its active management strategy, Horizon Capital has invested in over 190 companies, creating more than 56,000 jobs across the region.
The Catalyst Fund's Vision
The Catalyst Fund, which has already secured over 50% of its target size, totaling €152 million of a €300 million goal, is designed to inject substantial growth capital into asset-intensive sectors. By investing between €20 million and €50 million per project, the fund seeks to enable large-scale financial backing for critical sectors including energy, digital infrastructure, and construction.
Project Highlights
The partnership with Notus Energy is particularly significant. They will hold a 45% stake in this new project, which is expected to attract an overall investment exceeding €220 million. This includes structured financing from major international development finance institutions such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Swedfund, and others.
At its core, this wind energy initiative not only represents a critical step toward boosting the Ukrainian economy but also emphasizes substantial ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) impact. The project is forecasted to generate a remarkable 378 GWh of clean electricity annually, sufficient to power around 120,000 households while curtailing CO₂ emissions by approximately 244,000 tonnes each year. Furthermore, it is anticipated to create over 300 construction jobs and 50 permanent positions, all while adhering to international environmental and safety standards.
Statements from Key Officials
Dmytro Boroday, a partner at Horizon Capital and head of the Catalyst Fund, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration, stating, "We are thrilled to partner with Notus Energy on this significant renewable energy project. Heiner Dietmar Roger, the founder and CEO of Notus Energy, also commented, "Partnering with Horizon Capital marks a crucial milestone for Notus Energy as we aim to deliver our first wind project in Ukraine. This investment equips us with the necessary equity to enact our 124 MW project, which will provide essential energy capacity, generate highly skilled jobs, and contribute toward reaching Ukraine’s sustainability goals."
As the initiative progresses, the execution of this agreement remains contingent on the standard regulatory approvals and final agreements.
Outlook for Renewable Energy in Ukraine
The wind project led by Notus Energy is just the beginning, with plans for more projects in the pipeline. This venture is part of a larger strategy aiming for approximately 1.3 GW of renewable energy capacity in Ukraine by 2030, showcasing Notus Energy's commitment to the market and its potential for substantial growth.
As both firms move forward, their joint efforts symbolize a beacon of hope for the energy sector in Ukraine, demonstrating that with high standards and structured plans, the country can attract global investors and facilitate significant economic growth in its renewable energy landscape.
