Fairfax Carhaulers Secure Teamster Protections
In a significant achievement for labor rights, the carhaulers working for Cassens Transport at the General Motors Fairfax Assembly plant have successfully joined Teamsters Local 41. This critical move means they will operate under the National Master Automobile Transporters Agreement (NMATA), an arrangement that guarantees them enhanced economic benefits, improved working conditions, and substantial job security.
The change came about after a concerted effort from a group of ten drivers at the Fairfax plant, who served as the catalyst for a larger movement towards union representation. Avral Thompson, the Director of the Teamsters Carhaul Division, remarked, "These ten drivers were at the forefront of something much larger. They worked diligently to ensure that Fairfax workers received the same wages, benefits, and protections as all other carhaulers covered by the national agreement. Thanks to the commitment shown by Joe Monslow, Mark Malicoat, Pamela Newport, Bret Rust, Troy Pike, and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, they maintained a united front during countless negotiation sessions."
The struggle began when GM transferred the carhauling work to Hansen Adkins, a non-union carrier, prompting the Fairfax drivers to seek representation through Local 41 to regain the rights and benefits they had previously enjoyed. Earlier this year, when GM initiated the search for a new carrier, Cassens Transport was awarded the contract, allowing these drivers to gain back their rightful protections under the NMATA as of June 8, 2026.
One of the newly represented drivers, Bret Rust, expressed pride in their achievement, saying, "We understood what Teamster standards looked like, and we knew we deserved better. Now that we are under the national agreement, I am confident that the wages, benefits, seniority rights, and other advantages I’ve earned as a carhauler are secure. Our victory serves as an inspiration to every Hansen Adkins driver, showing them that they don’t have to accept lower standards."
Teamsters Local 41 serves a diverse array of workers across various industries in the Kansas City area, advocating for their rights and welfare. The message is clear: solidarity among workers can lead to substantial change, as evidenced by the Fairfax carhaulers' determination and success.
