Examining the Global Impact on Domestic Egg Production: An Online Event

Join Us for a Free Online Event on the Future of Food

On September 17, 2026, from 19:30 JST, a free online event titled “The Truth About Eggs: Exploring the Future of Food - Domestic Production 100%? Cost of Living Champion? It’s Tough for Me Too!” will take place as part of the pre-event for World Food Day Month 2026. This initiative is led by the Japan-Africa Society (非営利活動法人アフリカ日本協議会) and the certified NPO Hunger-Free World (認定NPO法人ハンガー・フリー・ワールド).

We are excited to welcome three distinguished guests from fields such as research, production, and international cooperation to discuss the essential role of eggs in our daily meals. This event will delve into the connections between rising prices, imported feed, climate change, environmental impact, and food security.

Why Focus on Eggs?

In Japan, it's estimated that each person consumes about 340 eggs annually. Eggs, often referred to as the 'cost of living champion', have a high domestic production rate. However, a significant portion of the feed for these hens is imported. Price fluctuations in global grain markets and currency exchange rates directly affect feed and egg prices, which ultimately reach our dinner tables.

Furthermore, the small eggshell symbolizes various challenges including sustainable agriculture, environmental concerns, animal welfare, food security, and the ethics of consuming life itself. This event aims to make these complex issues accessible and enjoyable to understand.

A Three-Perspective Approach to Egg Production

Our guests will provide unique insights from their respective fields during the event:
1. Kaoru Yamano from Kyoto Tachibana University will discuss the relationship between domestically produced eggs and imported feed, highlighting how this intertwines Japan's dining tables with global agricultural trends.

2. Mami Hirai from Obata Livestock Co. will share the realities of egg pricing from the perspective of a free-range poultry farm, addressing the complexities of raising chickens and the ethics of consuming them.

3. Yasuko Tsuchiya from Hunger-Free World will reflect on her international cooperation experiences in Africa, exploring the nutritional value of eggs and their significance in poverty and food security worldwide.

After the guest talks, we will have a discussion moderated by Kiyoshi Shiratori, who has extensive experience in agricultural development in Africa. This will include a Q&A session with participants.
