Nessu Unveils Incredible Circular Products from Scallop Shells
Nessu Inc., based in Setagaya, Tokyo, has unveiled four innovative prototypes made from upcycled scallop shells during the "Environmental Plaza Sapporo 2026" held on August 1-2, 2026. This exciting initiative is a key component of Nessu's Circular Design Lab, which aims to create a society where all children can fairly embrace the future.
The revealed products include:
- - Printing paper
- - Paper bags
- - Yupo (synthetic paper)
- - Food-grade plastic containers
During the two-day event, approximately 800 visitors, including around 400 children, engaged at Nessu’s booth. Attendees were enthusiastic about exploring the characteristics and applications of scallop shells as a material.
The demonstration highlighted the significant issue of scallop shell waste, which amounts to approximately 149,000 tons annually in Hokkaido alone, primarily derived from scallop processing. Attendees showed keen interest in the potential utilization of scallop shells in manufacturing materials, and there were numerous inquiries regarding possible applications and implementations. Nessu intends to utilize this feedback to further enhance product development and commercialization.
What is the Circular Design Lab?
The Circular Design Lab is Nessu’s initiative designed to convert unused resources and waste generated from companies and municipalities into usable materials. By adopting a circular approach, Nessu collaborates with a variety of enterprises to optimize the processes and supply chains involved in transforming waste into products. The lab not only aims to minimize environmental impact but also emphasizes maintaining quality, cost efficiency, and stability in supply, thereby integrating environmentally conscious material choices into everyday commercial activities.
Nessu’s team, led by CEO Yuki Kido, includes professionals with extensive experience in the paper and packaging materials industry. They harness their knowledge to design and propose circular materials. In addition to scallop shell products, Nessu is also committed to developing various sustainable materials from cardboard, plastics, and more.
A New Use for Hokkaido's Scallop Shells
In Japan, around 440,000 tons of scallops are produced annually, with over 90% sourced from Hokkaido. The processing of these scallops results in a substantial production of scallop shells. The primary component of these shells is calcium carbonate, which can be crushed and powdered to serve as a raw material for various applications, such as paper and plastics.
Currently, scallop shells in Hokkaido are reused as fertilizers and civil engineering materials. However, Nessu is broadening the scope of these shells by introducing them into everyday materials through upcycling initiatives.
The four innovative prototypes developed for this project include:
- - Printing Paper: Suitable for flyers, catalogs, and brochures.
- - Paper Bags: Ideal for shopping bags and wrapping paper.
- - Yupo: Applicable for posters, menu boards, and POP displays.
- - Food-grade Plastic Containers: Designed for ready-to-eat meals, lunch boxes, confectionery packaging, and processed food containers.
Moving forward, Nessu plans to expand partnerships with companies and municipalities to innovate tailored applications, conduct quality assessments, and proceed with commercialization, aiming to continuously cycle waste as a valuable resource.
Statement from CEO Yuki Kido
Yuki Kido emphasizes, “While many might be aware of the substantial waste generated from scallop shells, solutions to this problem are still being explored. We are committed to tackling this challenge through the materials we develop in our Circular Design Lab. If we can establish consistent outlets for frequently used materials, we believe we can address this issue. Although there are obstacles ahead, we look forward to working with interested parties to create concrete solutions and to leave a better environment for future generations.”
