Shanghai Electric Initiates Major 625MW Power Upgrade Project to Alleviate Iraq's Electricity Crisis

Shanghai Electric's Pioneering Project in Iraq



In a groundbreaking initiative, Shanghai Electric has commenced work on the Euphrates Combined Cycle Expansion Project in Iraq—an ambitious endeavor aimed at transforming the energy landscape of the war-scarred nation. As the project’s main contractor, Shanghai Electric will revamp power plants across four governorates, thereby increasing their capacity by an impressive 625 megawatts (MW) and boosting overall efficiency by nearly 50%.

Addressing the Energy Crisis



For over three decades, Iraq has grappled with severe electricity shortages, exacerbated by the country's dependence on natural gas, which has been hampered by slow domestic development. Most power facilities rely on gas imports, creating a significant barrier to economic progress and stability for its citizens. The combined cycle technology employed in this project is expected to generate an additional 5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, all without increasing fuel consumption.

The need for reliable energy solutions in Iraq is evident, and the project has already garnered attention from government officials. The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, has extolled the project for its strategic importance, emphasizing that it will not only enhance power supply but also reduce reliance on costly imported natural gas.

Project Details



The Euphrates Combined Cycle Expansion Project focuses on the governorates of Najaf, Karbala, Babylon, and Al-Qadisiyyah. The upgrade involves converting simple-cycle units into efficient combined-cycle systems. By repurposing waste heat from existing gas turbines, the project will use this high-temperature exhaust to drive a new steam turbine, thus generating additional electricity. The process also curtails thermal pollution, contributing to a more sustainable energy model.

Naseem Ayad, the Iraqi project manager at Najaf, highlighted that the collaboration with Shanghai Electric showcases the effectiveness of Chinese technology in enhancing energy output while minimizing environmental impacts. This project sets a new benchmark for power upgrades in Iraq, pointing towards a future with improved electricity reliability.

At the Karbala site, vital equipment such as heat recovery steam generators has arrived, marking a significant step in the project. This initiative will fully leverage Chinese standards and equipment in Iraq, ensuring a high-quality build and operational efficiency.
