Georgia Power and OpenAI Collaboration

In an exciting development for Georgia's economy, Georgia Power is set to partner with OpenAI on a major project that will take place in Effingham County, approximately 45 minutes from Savannah. As part of the agreement, OpenAI will require approximately 3,200 megawatts (MW) of power for its operations in the new facility. Importantly, they have agreed to offer up to 1,000 MW of flexible demand response. This means that during peak usage times, OpenAI will reduce its consumption, thereby enhancing the reliability of Georgia Power's entire electrical system. Under a 25-year agreement, Georgia Power will have the capability to limit the energy delivered to OpenAI during high-demand periods, which should support the grid's stability. Such demand response resources are vital as they enable Georgia Power to delay investments in new generation facilities, ultimately benefiting customers through reduced costs.

This approach has contributed to earlier rate freezes and is expected to deliver an annual savings of approximately $102 for the average residential customer by 2029.
