KIPP Philadelphia Preparatory Academy Unveils New Wellness Suite for Student Mental Health Support

KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools is excited to announce the grand opening of the DTLR Wellness Suite at KIPP Philadelphia Preparatory Academy (KPPA). This innovative space, designed by students and supported by the community, aims to foster the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of students and their families. This initiative is part of KIPP Philadelphia's ongoing dedication to holistic student support, particularly as mental health challenges increasingly affect youths.

The DTLR Wellness Suite has been developed through a collaboration with lifestyle retailer DTLR and athletic brand New Balance. It provides students with access to essential items, including clothing, shoes, hair care, affirmation stations, and mental health support, all within a safe and inviting environment to help them reflect and express their emotions. The space signifies a turning point in how schools can address one’s overall well-being.

Twelve-year-old Arrian, a sixth grader at KPPA, highlighted the significance of the Wellness Suite, stating, "Mental health is a part of somebody's being. The Maya Angelou quote on the wall, 'there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you,' really speaks to how important it is to let your voice be heard." This statement encapsulates the ethos of the wellness design initiative where every detail is intended to empower expression and self-care.

Eighth-grader Cianni shared her inspiring story about how the Wellness Suite came to be. "One day I wasn't doing too well. I talked to a social worker, and they asked me to help design the room. I sketched the design in one day. It felt amazing to be part of something so meaningful." This student-driven approach ensures that the suite genuinely meets the needs of its users, which are the students, thereby enhancing its impact.

In addition to its core functionalities, the Wellness Suite includes a fully stocked Student Emergency Closet, providing new clothes, footwear, and hygiene items for students in need. Free hair services will be offered by licensed barbers and stylists after school, giving students the opportunity to enhance their self-confidence in a way that extends beyond academics.
