CPower and Vertiv Forge Partnership to Enhance Data Center Energy Efficiency and Resilience

In a significant move to enhance the operational efficiency of data centers, CPower Energy and Vertiv have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at accelerating interconnection and maximizing the economic value of energy assets. This partnership, unveiled during the Transition-AI 2026 event, focuses on the integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) within data centers across the United States.

As the demand for data center power continues to rise, projected to more than double between 2025 and 2030, the move towards innovative energy solutions is imperative. Glenn Bogarde, CPower's Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, emphasized that data centers are increasingly interested in leveraging distributed energy generation alongside on-premise storage. This trend enables facilities to improve not only their immediate power supply but also their long-term sustainability and resilience.

The collaboration involves integrating Vertiv’s Vertiv™ EnergyCore Grid BESS with CPower’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platform. This integration allows data centers to utilize behind-the-meter storage systems for demand response programs, which are critical for managing energy loads during peak periods. Data centers equipped with these technologies can not only enhance their resilience against power interruptions but also contribute significantly to the grid's capacity, thus unlocking new economic opportunities.

A pivotal project in this partnership was demonstrated at Vertiv's Customer Experience Center in Ohio, where a 1 MW microgrid was established. This microgrid combines BESS, solar energy, and hydrogen fuel cells, enabling Vertiv to engage in demand response initiatives, achieve on-bill savings, and support PJM, North America’s largest grid operator. This project signifies how data centers can offset capital costs by optimizing their energy performance across various services.

With growing challenges in securing grid interconnections, Vertiv acknowledges that UPS and BESS solutions are evolving beyond just backup systems but are now essential components of energy infrastructure. Chris Thompson, Vice President of Advanced Technology and Global Microgrids at Vertiv, stated that when these energy solutions are intelligently integrated with facility operations, they transform into revenue-generating assets. This transformation not only improves return on investment but also enhances overall grid reliability.
