Historic Defense Equipment Exhibition Launches in Tokyo: A Step Back in Time

Introducing the Tokyo Debut of the Defense Technology Museum Exhibition

An exciting new chapter in Japan's military history will unfold as the NPO Defense Technology Museum Creation Association, located in Gotemba, Shizuoka Prefecture, embraces its first display in Tokyo. Set to take place on January 10 and 11, 2026, at the Tama Future Messe in Hachioji, this exhibition aims to preserve and promote Japan's domestic defense equipment.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is the legendary 'Ha-Go Bulldozer,' a transformed vehicle that has become a symbol of post-war reconstruction efforts. Originally a Type 95 light tank from the Imperial Japanese Army, this remarkable machine was repurposed into a bulldozer under the supervision of the GHQ, contributing to efforts in rebuilding Japan after World War II. Recently, in 2023, the association acquired and restored this rare gem, raising over 16 million yen through crowdfunding to complete its restoration, thus reviving its historical significance.

The exhibition will also feature the 'Kuromagane Shiki,' recognized as the world's first mass-produced compact four-wheel drive passenger car. This vehicle, also known as the Type 95 small passenger car, was developed and officially adopted by the Japanese Army in 1935. After the war, it was sold into civilian hands and laid dormant due to mechanical issues. Fortunately, the Defense Technology Museum Creation Association acquired it in 2014, and after two years of meticulous restoration, it is now in running condition, showcasing the ingenuity of Japan's automotive history.

This event serves as a fantastic opportunity for visitors to delve into Japan's military heritage as well as appreciate the engineering marvels of the past. The association believes that such exhibits not only pay homage to historical machinery but also enhance public consciousness regarding national defense matters.

Past activities, including a series of crowdfunding initiatives since 2014, have illustrated the community's engagement, raising over 130 million yen from approximately 5,501 supporters. Notably, a report held in Gotemba City on October 26, 2025, highlighted the collective efforts of the organization and its commitment to establishing a public defense technology museum to further educate the public.
