Saga Prefecture Unveils 2026 Events and Openings to Showcase Its Rich Culture

Saga Prefecture, located in the southwestern region of Japan, has announced an exciting lineup of events and openings planned for 2026. This initiative aims to invite international journalists and media organizations to participate in showcasing the rich culture and traditions of the area. Among the highlights are traditional festivals, trade fairs, spectacular openings, a global environmental initiative, and international sports events that encapsulate the spirit of Saga.

On March 18, the government of Saga and Snow Peak Inc. will launch 'Snow Peak Grounds Yoshinogari', an interactive complex situated within the Yoshinogari Historical Park. Drawing from historical architecture, the site will not only feature unique cottages but will also host one of Kyushu's largest camping areas, set to open on April 18.

From April 29 to May 5, the Arita Ceramic Fair will attract approximately 1.2 million visitors to the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. This event stands as the largest ceramics fair in Arita, celebrating the intricate artistry that has put this city on the map.

On June 7, Saga Prefecture will inaugurate the World Ocean Plastic Planning Center, the world's first center dedicated to combating ocean plastic pollution through regional initiatives. The center will provide hands-on experiences and exhibitions focused on upcycling ocean plastic, along with a café and a shop.

The internationally recognized Mynavi Tour de Kyushu, a multi-stage cycling race, will visit Saga for the first time on October 10, attracting top cyclists from the world's leading road racing teams.

The prestigious Saga International Balloon Fiesta will take place from October 30 to November 3, featuring hot air balloon competitions and festivities. Last year, over 800,000 visitors enjoyed the spectacle crafted by 124 pilots from 20 countries, making it Asia’s largest air sports event.

Finally, the Karatsu Kunchi festival will occur from November 2 to 4. This famous autumn festival, recognized as an UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, showcases impressive floats crafted through the traditional technique of dry lacquer, symbolizing the region's rich cultural heritage.

Saga Prefecture promises a vibrant calendar filled with events that not only entertain but also promote deeper understanding and appreciation of its culture, arts, and environmental initiatives. With the region easily accessible within an hour from major cities like Fukuoka and Nagasaki, international visitors are encouraged to explore all that Saga has to offer in 2026. The local government is actively supporting media coverage for these developments and offering services such as translation and interview coordination to ensure seamless engagement for visiting reporters and media outlets.
