The Rising Trend of Male Makeup: Insights from Recent Survey

In an era where gender norms are increasingly blurred, makeup is no longer just a domain for women. A survey conducted by Fancrew, a Tokyo-based company focused on analyzing consumer feedback, has uncovered intriguing insights regarding men's perceptions and usage of makeup products. The nationwide survey, which received responses from 986 members of the Fancrew community, including 197 men and 789 women, sheds light on the evolving landscape of grooming habits among men.

Key Findings from the Survey

1. Interest in Makeup Products Among Men

The survey revealed that 59% of male respondents expressed a desire to try makeup products or are already using them. Notably, this interest is most pronounced among younger men in their twenties. The motivations behind this trend are diverse, with 70% of these men citing the desire to enhance their cleanliness and health appearance as their primary reason for using makeup. Additionally, 53% indicated a wish to conceal skin concerns such as acne scars or dark circles, while 26% noted its importance as a workplace etiquette.

2. Reluctance From Some Men

Conversely, for those men who expressed a lack of interest in makeup, the reasons were quite revealing. A significant 54% of these men stated that they didn’t feel any necessity to use makeup, while 27% mentioned not wanting to be perceived as wearing makeup and 17% confessed to feeling unsure about how to use such products or finding them too complicated. This highlights the challenge in breaking down the stigma that makeup is purely a female endeavor.

3. Women’s Perspectives on Male Makeup Usage

Interestingly, the survey also sought the opinions of women regarding male makeup usage. A positive response was recorded, with 67% of women stating that they view the use of makeup by men—whether it be family members or friends—as very favorable or somewhat favorable. This indicates a societal shift in acceptance and could encourage more men to experiment with makeup.

Additional Insights

Beyond the primary questions, participants also provided feedback on their experiences with purchasing makeup at pop-up events and their motivations for acquiring new makeup products. The study, which comprised a total of 23 questions, paints a comprehensive picture of current consumer attitudes towards makeup among men.

Methodology

Conducted between December 17, 2025, and January 5, 2026, this internet survey targeted general consumers within Fancrew’s community of 1.5 million registered users. With a diverse demographic representation, the insights gathered are not just a reflection of personal opinions but highlight broader social trends.

In conclusion, the increasing openness towards makeup among men signals a cultural shift worth noting. With more men recognizing the potential benefits of skincare and makeup, we may see a continuing evolution in the standards of male grooming, paving the way for creativity and self-expression regardless of gender. As the stigma fades and acceptance grows, brands could seize this moment to cater to a previously overlooked audience.
