Arclin Achieves ISCC PLUS Certification for Sustainable Kevlar® Production in Richmond

Arclin, a prominent player in materials science, has recently announced a significant achievement: its production facilities for Kevlar®, Kevlar® EXO™, and Nomex® located at the Spruance manufacturing plant in Richmond have been awarded the ISCC PLUS certification. This marks the second facility within Arclin’s aramid sites to receive this certification, following the Asturias manufacturing plant's recognition in 2025. The ISCC PLUS certification not only underscores Arclin's commitment to sustainability but also enhances its global capabilities in providing Kevlar® and Nomex® products developed from sustainable raw materials.

The ISCC PLUS certification serves as a robust verification mechanism for sustainability, encompassing the entire supply chain from the sourcing of raw materials to their production and distribution. It aims to reduce the carbon footprint associated with products and to gradually transition from fossil fuel-derived raw materials to more sustainable alternatives, including bio-sourced materials. This initiative also promotes a shift towards a circular economy—an essential part of today’s global sustainability efforts.

Mark Glaspey, the President of Arclin, expressed the importance of this achievement, saying, "Our products significantly enhance and protect the lives of millions within various sectors like aerospace, personal protection, energy solutions, and defense. The incorporation of ISCC PLUS certification into our production processes for Kevlar®, Kevlar® EXO™, and Nomex® reaffirms Arclin's dedication to supporting our customers as they strive for reduced emissions. Looking forward, we will continue our commitment to innovation while minimizing our environmental footprint for future generations."

Since 2022, Arclin has transitioned to utilizing renewable electricity for the production of these materials, procuring renewable energy credits (RECs) and Guarantees of Origin (GOs) that align with their annual energy consumption. A noteworthy addition is the installation of a 12.6 MWp onsite solar array at the Asturias manufacturing site in 2025, featuring over 22,000 solar panels, aimed at optimizing self-consumption of energy.

The certification from ISCC PLUS signifies Arclin’s strategic initiative to partner with organizations throughout the value chain to effectively mitigate Scope 3 emissions. The company is committed to innovation as a means to aid its customers in achieving their sustainability objectives.
