Kansas City's Great Pumpkin Rescue: A Green Initiative for Halloween and Beyond

With Halloween just around the corner, Kansas City is stepping up its sustainability efforts through a community initiative called The Great Pumpkin Rescue, launched by KC Can Compost. This program aims to divert pumpkins from landfills and transform them into valuable compost after the Halloween festivities conclude.

As part of this initiative, KC Can Compost, in collaboration with local partners, is providing the residents of Kansas City multiple options to ensure that their pumpkins are repurposed rather than wasted.

Easy and Fun Pumpkin Drop-Off Events

Kansas City will host free drop-off events at notable locations:
  • - Boulevard Brewing Company: On Sunday, November 1, residents can bring their pumpkins for composting between 11 AM and 3 PM. Attendees can also enjoy a beer and support KC Can Compost, as a portion of the brewery’s sales will go towards the initiative.
  • - Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium: On Saturday, November 7, from 10 AM to 2 PM, families visiting the zoo can drop off their uncarved and unpainted pumpkins, making it an enjoyable part of their trip while contributing to a greener environment.

Extended Pumpkin Collection

In addition to the events, the success of Prairie Village's community composting program has led to an extension of pumpkin collection in this area. Celebrating its one-year anniversary, the program has nearly 800 registered users, which includes about 10% of the households in the city actively participating in diverting food scraps from landfills. From November 2 to November 16, registered users can drop off their pumpkins at any of the city’s designated Smart Can locations, where specialized 64-gallon composting bins are available for pumpkin collection. Residents can use access codes from the Smart Can app for convenience.

A Little Pumpkin Prep Goes a Long Way

To maximize benefits, KC Can Compost encourages residents to prepare their pumpkins before drop-off. Splitting them into smaller pieces helps them decompose faster and makes for easier transportation. Utilizing a brown paper bag or a BPI-certified compostable liner can also simplify the process.

Why Composting Matters

Pumpkins are not just Halloween decorations; they are nutrient-rich organic materials that can improve soil health when composted. When sent to landfills, organic waste generates methane—a potent greenhouse gas. Kristan Chamberlain, Executive Director of KC Can Compost, emphasizes that "a pumpkin doesn't stop being valuable when Halloween is over. It is mostly water and nutrients. When we throw it in the landfill, we lose those resources and create methane. When we compost, that same pumpkin becomes something our soil can use again."

Comprehensive Pumpkin Disposal Guidelines

To ensure a successful composting effort, KC Can Compost has outlined specific guidelines:
  • - Accepted: Carved or uncarved, unpainted pumpkins; natural gourds; and squash.
  • - Not Accepted: Painted pumpkins, candle wax, synthetic decorations, glitter, or plastic bags. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the guidelines at their designated drop-off locations before arriving.

Additional Ways to Keep Pumpkins Out of Landfills

For those unable to attend events, there are several other avenues to ensure pumpkins don’t end up in landfills:
  • - Home Composting: Breaking down pumpkins and jack-o'-lanterns into smaller pieces can speed up decomposition in backyard compost piles.
  • - Become a KC Can Compost Member: Residents can sign up for individual memberships that allow them year-round access to food scrap collection through KC Can Compost’s Smart Can network.
  • - Join a Community Pumpkin Smash Event: Compost Collective KC often hosts unique Pumpkin Smashing Parties, where residents can bring their pumpkins to be smashed into compostable pieces; check their website for the latest updates.

Building on a Foundation of Impact

The Great Pumpkin Rescue is a continuation of KC Can Compost's dedication to eco-friendly practices. With over 10 million pounds of organic materials diverted from landfills, their efforts contribute significantly to environmental sustainability. As the holiday season approaches, the organization invites residents to share information about pumpkin collection, sign up for memberships, or donate to their environmental education programs.

Kansas City is taking significant strides toward a greener future, and The Great Pumpkin Rescue is a prime example of how community efforts can lead to substantial environmental benefits. With participation from local residents, this initiative is set to make a lasting impact even after Halloween.
