Pivoting to a New Path: Anthony Jimenez's Trade School Journey
In March 2026, Anthony Jimenez's story emerged as a testament to resilience and adaptability. Graduating high school in 2024, Anthony anticipated a seamless transition into the workforce. However, the reality of a challenging job market proved otherwise. Despite his hopes for immediate employment, he encountered silence from prospective employers, grappling with numerous rejections and mounting frustration.
The prolonged job search led Anthony to reconsider his strategy and seek additional training that would increase his employability. Recognizing the demand for specialized skills, he set out to explore trade schools, eventually discovering UEI College in Huntington Park. Here, he found a program that resonated with his interests: the Electrician Technician program.
One of the program's appealing aspects was its streamlined nature, with Anthony envisioning himself completing it in just ten months. Although he initially contemplated pursuing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), he was drawn to the electrical field, particularly due to its hands-on nature and emphasis on problem-solving. He expressed his affinity for troubleshooting, stating, "I personally like troubleshooting. And electrical is really hands-on. I could see myself doing it for the rest of my life."
The curriculum at UEI College employs a hybrid format, blending online coursework with on-campus laboratory sessions. This structure was particularly advantageous for Anthony, who had previously struggled with traditional academic environments. The practical approach encouraged him to engage actively in his education, offering a fresh perspective on learning.
In the laboratory settings, he has developed competencies in fundamental electrical tasks, such as pipe bending, wall mounts, and wiring. “I didn’t know anything about electrical when I started,” Anthony admitted. “They pretty much taught me everything from the start.” This comprehensive training has equipped him with the knowledge and technical skills that are highly sought after in the job market.
As he approaches the completion of his program, Anthony is focusing on the next steps in his career. His immediate objective is to obtain an entry-level apprenticeship, setting a timeline of three years to earn his journeyman status. Ultimately, he aspires to secure a contractor's license and launch his own business, embodying a long-term vision for his professional future.
Motivation for Anthony extends beyond personal accomplishment; it also encompasses his desire to provide for his family and honor important milestones in their lives. Reflecting on the decision to return to school, he remarked, “Going back to school was the best option for me. It’s never too late to start. As long as you put your effort into it and make sacrifices, it’ll be worth it in the end.”
