Hanwha Power Achieves ABS Approval for New Battery-Powered Containership Design

On October 22, 2026, Hanwha Power proudly announced that they have received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This significant endorsement is for the design of a groundbreaking 1,700 TEU containership that operates entirely on battery power. The presentation of the AiP certificate took place during the Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells (MHE) conference and exhibition in Bergen, Norway. At the ceremony, attended by Jong-kyu Hwang, Vice President of Technology Solutions at Hanwha Power, the company unveiled their vision for a zerocarbon maritime future.

The newly approved design features an innovative electric propulsion system supported by a large-scale energy storage solution, boasting a capacity of approximately 151 MWh. This system allows the vessel to operate without direct carbon emissions, thanks to the integration of port charging infrastructure, which enhances its environmental sustainability.

Moreover, the design employs containerized batteries that can be handled just like standard freight containers, optimizing space efficiency and maximizing loading capacity. This design ensures that battery replacement can be administered flexibly, facilitating an easier transition towards decarbonizing regional shipping and short-distance transport.

Jong-kyu Hwang expressed optimism about this achievement, stating, "This AiP from ABS represents a significant step forward in extending Hanwha Power's marine technology capabilities toward fully electric vessels powered by large-scale battery systems. We aim to respond to the needs of the next-generation zero-carbon shipping market with integrated solutions that combine electric propulsion and containerized battery technologies."

In addition to this major milestone, Hanwha Power also announced that they have finalized the basic design for a 1,000 TEU battery-powered containership. Building on their extensive experience across various ship classes, the company is committed to developing a full suite of electric-powered vessels tailored to diverse operational conditions and client demands.

As the maritime industry transitions toward more sustainable practices, innovations like those introduced by Hanwha Power are critical. The approval by ABS not only solidifies Hanwha's market position but also opens new avenues for eco-friendly shipping solutions. With ongoing advancements in battery technology and a growing focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the future of maritime transport is inevitably leaning towards zero-emission strategies. Hanwha Power's continuous efforts to develop advanced electric-powered vessels hint at a transformative shift in the way goods are transported across oceans, making the shipping industry more environmentally friendly than ever before.

The conference is running from October 21 to 23 at the Scandic Hotel in Bergen City, bringing together industry leaders in maritime innovation and technology to discuss and promote breakthroughs in environmental shipping technologies.

With this major development, Hanwha Power is poised to influence the maritime sector significantly. Their designs not only aim for efficiency but also reflect a deep commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness, aligning closely with global environmental goals.

Looking ahead, the company plans to further expand its portfolio of environmentally friendly marine propulsion systems, driving innovation and progress within the industry as it embraces a cleaner, greener future.

As we witness this pivotal moment in maritime history, it is clear that companies like Hanwha Power are leading the charge toward a sustainable future, demonstrating that technology and environmental responsibility can coexist harmoniously.
